I'm still a pup in the wide world of smoking. I've gotten pretty decent at ribs and I'm giving pork roast a try now. I'm wondering, what's a good way to smoke potatoes? My favorite is Yukon gold. Thanks!!

Now that's a new one on me.....

How about soaking them in liquid (apple cider?), piercing with a fork and setting in a perforated aluminum throw-away broiler tray? Spritz with more cider now and then?

I actually tried my own technique tonight and it worked out pretty well. I used 2 tablespoons of each of the following: ground sage, salt, black pepper, bay leaves (was out of parsley), and garlic powder. I started by melting a cup of butter, punched a bunch of holes in the potatoes (Yukon Gold), covered the spuds in butter, rolled them in the mix, and smoked them for 2 hours without foil. Tasted great!!

Sounds good, think I am going to do something similar next time I smoke.

This time I used bacon grease instead of butter, and I had parsley instead of bay leaves. It made a huge difference! I couldn't smoke them since my smoker was full of ribs. I grilled them over low heat for about 25 min and then through them in the stove. They were awesome. The skin blackened just because of the herbs, but even eating the black skin was tasty. I'll definitely use this many times to come.

Hah, this weekend my wife said "we have these potatoes, why don't you put them in the smoker?" I'd never tried it before, but they turned out... exactly like baked potatoes. I poked a bunch of holes in medium sized russets, ran water over them and brushed off the dirt, and rolled them in foil. I think they probably sat for about three hours and were 210F when the pork was done, so it worked out perfectly.

The foil was dark ban brown, and I don't think any smoke got to the potatoes, but that's fine.

When I do mine, I wash them, rub them with EVOO and apply some rub and some parmesan cheese as well. Then I wrap them in foil and let them go on the smoker for at least 2 hours, with temps runnning right at 250°. They are SOOOOOO good that way....let us know how the ended up, and post photos!

I know it's not smoked, but I love the Syracuse, NY style of Salt Potatoes.

Once you have a smoked potato you will not want to cook it any other way.

I did a cook-out at my work last month and cooked several Briskets, but the big hit was the 150 potatoes I cooked. I had people come up and ask how did I cook these potatoes.

It is simple, I applied a little oil on them, put any seasoning you like to the outside and placed them in my Traeger Pellet Grill. I put the setting on smoke and cook them for 4 hours and if they are still not done then I will put them up to 225.

You don’t even need to add anything to your potato, no butter or sour cream needed, just pick it up and eat it. They are OUTSTANDING!
I DO NOT FOIL. Why would you put foil on your potatoes when you grill or smoke? Might as well just put them in the oven!

Enjoy

I love smoked taters.. Simple enough to do, wash 'em, rub'em with oil (or not), throw 'em in while smoking... Great as is, or with butter, sour cream, herbs, etc. Better yet, as homefries.. Yummy...

When we are asked for a baked potato for a party it is
usually in addition to our regular two sides so we offer
them cut in half, this way they have a choice of taking either one or two. We cut, then mop with AVOO
sprinkle garlic and herb spices, foil and put in the
cooker. We have had many compliments on them done this way.

Smoked potatoes are absolutely delicious. Marinade them overnight in your favorite beer and stir in some fresh garlic. Put in the smoker for several hours without foil.

I have also had success partially cooking them in the microwave, then injecting them with a mixture of soy, teryaki, and garlic. After injecting, place in the smoker until fully cooked. Tasty.
