Can't quite find the stuff anywhere. I came across some match-light royal oak at an Ace hardware in south Charlotte, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anybody from the Charlotte area know where I can find it?

They have it at the Restaurant Depot. They use to have the good USA stuff there, but I went there yesterday and its now all the Argentina stuff. I bought a few bags because it was only 7.99, so will have to give it a try this weekend and see how it goes.

Well, I went to restaurant depot and left there pretty hot headed. I didn't realize that you had to have your business license to verify that you are restaurant owner to purchase stuff there. I got to the cashier with my two bags of royal oak that I had searched all over the dang county for, and ultimately was denied the right to buy it. I asked the manager there if she could make an exception since they seemed to be the only place around that carries the stuff, and she got all b****y with me and barked at me about how they aren't open to the public. Is there anywhere else in NC where you can buy royal oak?!

Are you looking for brickets or lump? Been a few years since I lived in Charlotte, but many Walmarts carry RO. RO lump can also be found under different names like Best Choice, Big Green Egg, GFS and some others I can't remember. According to Nakedwhiz, Harris Teeter has a very good store brand of lump that may be worth trying. Hope this helps.

If you are a KCBS member RD will give you a free membership card under a deal they made with KCBS, that's how I buy there.

I read somewhere recently that RD doesn't give out the meberships like they used to but will now issue you a 1 day pass when you show your KCBS membership.

I've read WallyWorld carries RO, but every time I've been there it's Kford and Sams Choice. The Harris teeter brand as mentioned, is suppose to be good, I know the all natural briqueets are pretty nice. Also if you like OCC rancher products, the following is an e-mail I got back from the OCC company, they're here in Charlotte supposedly:

Thank you for your email.
Earth Fare carries our RANCHER 18lb
Trader Joe's carries our RANCHER in their TJ's label. The same high quality charcoal in the TJ's bag.
Bloom carries our 10lb lump, 8.8lb RANCHER AND our 18lb RANCHER.
Ingles carries our 10lb lump, and will have our 8.8lb RANCHER by mid June.
I hope that this is helpful...Please tell everyone you know!!
Thank you, and enjoy!
Eric

Im looking for Royal Oak lump. It was a sad situation at RD. I had searched all over world for that stuff, and I was happy as a hog in slop when I saw it and was double bear-huggin two bags of that stuff walking towards the register. Things went down-hill shortly after that.

Now that you mention it, I've used that HT brand once or twice and remember it being pretty decent. The only problem was that it comes in such small bags and it isn't cheap. It almost seems like you could get double what you pay for other brands.

I did find that there is an ACE hardware in Waxhaw that carries it, but every time I go down there, they're out of lump and only have match light left. They took my number last week and called when they were supposed to get it, but when they called, they informed me that the distribution warehouse was all out of it so they didn't know when they would get it.

I guess I am just SOL on getting a hold of the famous Royal Oak. Maybe I'll but a few bags off of you that are privileged to shop at RD.

IF YOU LOOK AT WAL MART IN LINCOLNTON, DENVER, CHERRYVILLE, HUNTERSVILLE THEY ALL HAVE IT YOU MAY HAVE TO WALK OUT IN THE GARDEN AREA AND FIND IT. I KNOW THAT IT IS THERE CAUSE I USE IT PERSONALLY ALL THE TIME. IT RUNS FOR $6.99 FOR A 10LB BAG.

I know the Walmart on 16/Mt Holly Huntersville Rd used to have it but the last month or so they have not had any. I am not sure if that is just a temp situation as they are remodeling that store though...... Denver used to have it but I havent been there in awhile. I do know that the Walmarts in South Carolina carry it, particularly the one in Ft Mill near Tega Cay on 160. Thats where I used to go to load up before I got an RD membership.

I wound up getting into contact with someone at RO corporate that is based out of Lake Wylie SC. He claims that Walmart nationwide carries the stuff. I'll be real irritated then when it was at dang Walmart, the place that I try to avoid the most - this entire time.

"Nation wide" doesn't mean "every store" - and indeed, of the four closest Wallyworlds to me, only two carry RO lump; the other two are exclusively Kingsford.

You just gotta put your sneakers on and run around and look for it Wink

Cheers

That is exactly what I did after work...and by golly, look at what I found. Royal Oak at Walmart! You have to understand, I can't stand going to Walmart. The place is just too difficult to deal with and I always leave there grouchy. This time, I left there smiling with 3 bags of RO. I figured I'd sort of stock up just in case they stop carrying it at that location.

Which Walmart did you end up getting it at? How much a bag? Unfortunatly it doesn't look like the made in USA stuff.

Yes but the made in the USA stuff says it right on the front of the bag at the bottom and the bags are wider than that, to fit the much larger pieces!

I picked up those bags at a Walmart in Fort Mill near my work. Just this past Sunday, I pulled through the Mooresville Walmart just take a peek to see if they had it, and they did! It was in the outdoor garden section for around $6.39 a bag. And I can vouch for day_tripper, the stuff says made in usa right on the back - unless RO is false advertising!
