Since my added ring is neither perfectly round nor level I figured I would try adding a rope gasket which wil help with the seal. Does anyone see a problem with using Permatex to adhere to the lid?

My understanding is that rtv gasses off formaldehyde. I've seen 300F quoted as a temp, I'd look into it for sure. I'd try to use stainless screw or rivets if possible.

Here is the one I used on my Graphite rope to seal the gaps.

Decided to remove the gasket. I will clean up after a little grouper and snapper fishing. I'll be ordering the Rutland tonight.

I don't know if it will help but locally both home depot and ace hardware carry rutland stuff.

good luck with the rutland,, ive tried it in the past with no luck, it went on well but when it dried it was like crumbling concreat it never did stick worth a darn,, i have used the black hi-temp gasket maker stuff and have never had an issue with it,, in my opinon we dont get them cookers up high enough in heat to cause any problems from the sealant ,, but thats just my opinon Wink

They make bake ware out of silicone so I don't see how bad it could be in a cooker that runs below 350...then again I ain't no scientist.

From my experience, there is no such thing as "silicone".
Rather, there are so many different "silicones" available that it's amazing they all get lumped into one single category of "silicone".

How is it that one type of silicone gets eaten alive by certain products while other ones don't? Clearly they aren't made of the same stuff. Use clear silicone, even automotive type, on automotive parts and it won't last long at all. Gray silicone seems unaffected by anything automotive.

Not to mention that there is no list, on the tube at least, of additives nor what happens to these when heated to certain temps. After all, these will be used in toxic petroleum soaked environments anyway, so what difference does it make if they're toxic too?

Without doubt, cookware type silicone is vastly different than engine silicone, and there is certainly some sort of group to save us from ourselves that sets up all kinds of rules when it comes to "food-safe" products.

Graphite used in rope gasket cement has a melting point of 3600° or so; the odds of anything offgassing compared to something rated to a few hundred degrees is pretty slim.
