Did you get to eat any Serbian smoked bbq? If so how was it? Dad made a similar bbg grill (Corner style) about 40 years ago… wish I had a picture of that one now.

No, they are not big on BBQ, other than roasting a pig. Dad didn't do one this year, though I did have some at a friend's house bought from the local store. (In the small village outside of Belgrade the local merchants roast pigs every day so you always have some available.) I did eat a ton of smoked sausages of various types and bacon. Smile

You can see some from other years in this thread: http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=371794&highlight=#371794

Dan, Good to hear from you! Where have you been? The inside lining of the firebox is fire brick. We didn’t use fire mortar on this… despite all my pleading, it was too expensive. Dad said if it cracks he will fix it... it’s His pit and his money. I’ve got to say he has had good luck with regular mortar and fire in the past.

Still here bud, just lurking lately. Been busy getting ready for summer and our first competition in a couple weeks!!!!

Love this brick pit, thanks for the info.

chuckied, that cooker just looks awesome. Very Happy I have an idea, how about you and your Father come on over here to Texas and we can whip up one of these bad boys in my yard. Very Happy You get brick laying practice, your Father and I will drink beer and discuss welding and old times and when your done we will all cook up a fine meal. Very Happy Sound like a plan? Seriously, what a fine project y'all have teamed up and put together. Awesome job by you both. Very Happy

Kevin,
Sounds like a GREAT PLAN... is that before or after we build mine? I think yours should be first, so you can give me a free welding lesson or two and some more ideas (no Joke!) Laughing Laughing

Hey, I picked up a new build (welding stuff) tool today check it out.

http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Power-Tools-Saws-Cut-Off-Saws/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xgtZarfb/R-202201510/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Got 10% off (lowes coupon... made'em cry a little) and I had an extra gift card for $25 bones in the wallet (didn't even know if it was used or not)... It's like Christmas in June over here! Shocked Laughing Laughing

Draw up the plans! We would love to have some REAL Texas Q and work on your pit... It would probably got together real fast with all three of us on the job.

Start getting some brick. Wink

See Ya!

Ok,
It’s been a hard ending week for the father and son team. The test fire did not go well (low temps and a crack or two in the firebox), so I got some advice from K.A.M. and went back to the drawing board. The reverse flow pipe is out, (since it is 25% the size it should be) and the exhaust will exit a brick chimney on the far end.
My Dad was supposed to stop all building until the Monday morning build meeting, but he didn’t. One of his friends gave him a stick of 4” pipe… and he was off to the races. He was going to finish the exhaust, but was not aware of the changes to the plan… This kinda thing happens, and this is what happened.

A hole in the wrong place. Shocked Laughing Laughing

We are laughing at ourselves, please laugh with us… not at us Laughing . Changes have begun as I write this (Dad called) and I will see what transpired at the Tuesday morning build meeting. Wink

Chuck, Brick and steel are not much different as far as knocking out or off and re-doing. That is how my scrap pile was created years ago. Laughing Keep up the fine work and keep us posted. Smile

KAM,
The scrap bin is definitely going to grow until this build is over!

Dad is in full on rebuild mode at the moment … At the meeting he told me he was moving the bench, He must get tired of walking around it all day. We want the new chimney to be 4’ high (from the grill), to keep the smoke up over our heads (hopefully). He got all of this done by noon and kicked me and my best friend out so he could get back to work. Laughing I guess I will find out how it went at the Wednesday build meeting. Take a look….

New firebox to cook chamber opening. Shocked

New exhaust hole for chimney and start of chimney base (5"x5" thanks again KAM) Cool

Missionsusmc,
K.a.m. is ahead of you on the Pit building schedule, so after Texas we can shoot over to Tennessee. I think we will call it “Chuckie D’s U.S. Brick Pit building Tour” or “Chuckie D’s Divorce”. Laughing Laughing K.a.m. get ready to go, now you are officially part of the team! Cool

K.a.m., Thanks for the kind words & all the help on this rebuild.

On to the build,
Tuesday build meeting (about 8 AM),
Dad said he couldn’t sleep last night, He knew something was wrong with the pit… but He didn’t know what it was… until about 3:00 am. His chimney was wrong, he spent the next two hours trying to find a fix. There was no fix, all he could do was tear it down and start over. He decided to blame the problem on me… He is kinda right, I am the chief barbeque tech support guy. The chimney has four sides, he added three and the cook chamber was going to be the fourth. The problem was that fourth side is needed for the lid to rest on. He tore the base down and is building a new one. Things are progressing despite this run of “Pit Gremlins” Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil . I most likely would not post our mistakes but, I think the other rookies (like me) should know this is a learning process, mistakes will be made (no big deal)… learn from them, laugh at’em and move on!

Firebox cap.

The teardown! Mad

New opening to cook chamber. Very Happy Cool

A wise man once told me "there are alot of sleepless nights when you are building a pit"... Wink

Thanks Patruns... with all the cool rigs (or nice coockers) that are posted by the Ringers, I wanted the other rookies to know that mistakes WILL be made and not to shy away from a build. Just dive in, if you have a problem, just ask for some help. The Ringers are a great group of people and somebody will help you sooner or later.

K.a.m. Thanks! more pic's are on the way, as soon as I recover from Fathers Day! Shocked Laughing Laughing

pulit, Thanks for the kiind words, get some brick and go for it.
You can do it! We have faith in you! Wink
