Finally some good news. I made a foil ring to go around the top ring of the drum and 1 to go around the lip of the lid. This seemed to seal all of the leaks around the lids. I could open the exhaust back up and crack the ball valve. temps stabilized around 240-250.

I will have some work to do to make these permanent solutions,but it is finally nice to have some control over the temps.
