I am wondering if there is a ratio between the vent in the fire box the opening between the fire box and the smoker and the size and height of the exhaust stack. Our build pic are comming soon and thanks for your help. We are building 20 inch dia by 28 long horizontal smoker

Greetings, from one Dave to another! And welcome to the 'Ring!
You should check out this topic and the Pit Builder Calculator therein.
http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20871
If you plug in the numbers describing the volume of your cook chamber, the Calculator will provide a recommended volume for your firebox, as well as the firebox-cook chamber opening, and it will also provide a mechanism to define the exhaust stack size (you plug in the diameter stack pipe and it will suggest the length).
It will likely prove very helpful for your build!
Cheers!
