I am looking into purchasing a traeger "Texas" model. I have a nearly unlimited supply of pecan shells, I was wondering if anyone has ever used them for smoking and would they work in a traegar instead of pellets?

I have used them for years but not in that kind of smoker.
Let us know how it goes.

I don't think the shells would push though like the pellets and i would bet they would jam up under the auger, possibly burning up the auger motor.

I have a texas model and I would never attempt that. Even if the auger feed worked, I think you would be asking for real trouble with the rate of burn that you get with pellets. I am trying to sell my traeger. It is a good chicken cooker but I have not been impressed. Are you sure that a Traeger is the best way to go?

No, i am not sure about the traeger...I just read up on their web site.......I thought it would be nice to have teh automatic control for smoking....but maybe I jsut need to finish my UDS and call it good.
New question...would pecan hulls work in the UDS?

I dont see why they wouldn't you would still want to include charcoal to keep tie fire going but keep the hulls mixed in. thats got me thinking of trying the same thing myself.

Yes, the pecan hulls will work in the UDS. Just throw them on top of the coals. They will burn quite a bit faster than wood though.

I agree, based on the limited similarity with peanut shells. I eat alot of roasted peanuts and I always save the shells as smoke material. Makes for a really nice, buttery flavor to the meat. I also use them for fuel when I am low on coals. One thing they do well is bridge the coals nicely. You have alot of air gaps with lump coals, which is fine, in fact we know that too much ash can smother a fire. But if you have a good basket and are willing to shake it now and then, the shells make kind of like a slag of coal that is like a giant loaf or something. Not sure if that is good or bad, but it looks great. I imagine with the more substantial pecan hulls you could get a good half hour out of a load. Maybe more. I just think it is important to burn what you have, within limits.
