Here are some pics of an annual abalone trip I take with friends and family. We were about 30 minutes north of FT. Ross in California. There were 32 of us this year. Most of these pics are of the big potluck we had on Saturday. My contribution was 4 racks of ribs.

This one was 9"

cleaning the abs

slicing the abalone

tenderizing the abs

egg wash and panko for the abs

finished product

Oyster Saki Shooters with Tobiko, Mirin, Siricha and cilantro

money shot

mussel and sausage stew with mussles right out of the ocean where we were ab diving

The end of the evening

that is exactly what they are and they are BOMB one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life i love them fried or just sautéed in butter. when i dive northern Cali we would hunt them lol they are fast lol i encourage everyone to try them when you think of snail you think mushy and soft not true you have to pound the $hit out of these things to tender them up

I notice they're tagged - what is the limit?

Many years ago, when in SoCal we'd just go out with a crowbar and pry them off the rocks - they were everywhere. Not the case anymore...

My dad tells me about how he'd swim out to the breakwater in Santa Monica and dive for abs and throw them in a inner tube that had a net in the middle and get lobsters too.

The Limit is three on your person so if you want to go out and get more the next day you pretty much have to eat them. I think it is 24 for the season you get a card to hole punch when you get your ab tags with your fishing license. If you get busted its 500 a pop.
