Does anyone own a pellet fed electric pit like the Traeger in the link below? If so how well do they work? Any pros or cons?

If you use the search engine at top of page in red you will find this:

I have a friend that has 1/2 of that set-up in the floor model. And I have cooked on it several times. It really has surprised me with how well it performs as a smoker. The only con I would mention is that if you turn it all the way up and want to use it as a grill then I would not recommend it. Make sure you get the digital set-up althuogh I do not think it is avaiable without it. Run it on the smoke setting the first 3 hours and then bump it up to 250 and you will be surprised at the quality of butts you can get off of it. We have sqeezed as many as 20 butts in it before with an 8 pound average and it never blinked. I can honestly recomend the unit for smoking good q. I would also point out that two 1 and 1/2 barrel UDS's with 3 grates in each will also do the trick for a whole lot less money.

The link didn't return any results? Sometimes it does that on search.

cayenneman there are a lot of traeger owners here and a search, while it may be a pain, will get you some feedback from owners.

The common thing about Traegers is they are easy to use. Pellets are 100% wood (I own a Cookshack FEC which uses pellets).

Traegers are now made in China and have little/no insulation. That's okay during the summer, but if you use it in colder weather, the lack of insulation makes you burn more pellets and in some COLD weather, they just can't get up to heat.

Guess the question is are you wanting a smoker? a grill? a combination?

Interesting. Unless my memory is glitching, the Forum Search behavior has been changed. Now, any search returns the same url shown above, whereas before it returned a url with the search term embedded in it, which was indeed handy for providing a quick leg up to others...

Cheers!

I have a Traeger LilTexan and we cooked 28 lbs of ribs and butt for 30+ people. Started at 0530 and ended at 1500. All I did was watch the level in the hopper and the Traeger did the rest. I'd like to trade my gas grill for another, bigger, Traeger!!

I own a Traeger and I regret the day that I bought it. If you want to pay 5K for a chicken cooker then go ahead and buy it. There are so many better cookers out there that you need to consider before spending that kind of money

You are likely to find more Fast Eddy/ Cookshack owners here with that much real estate.

Lots of us are cooking with Traegers, its just that we have smaller Traegers. That one has 4 times the real estate as my "Big Tex" ... and 3 more firepots. I love my Traeger and all, and would love the next size down from that monster... but if I were looking seriously at that Monster I would also be looking seriously at a Fast Eddy Cooker. And maybe a reverse flow monster with a Computerized powerdraft system.

At that level, a question you should consider is where your going to get pellets. The best answer is in bulk, by the pallet. Mere mortals like me stop by a store and pick up a bag of pellets every other cook to keep it topped up. Your looking at 2 bags every time you fire it up, with 3 or 4 bags in reserve just to be safe. Wink Im just saying... your gonna burn a lot of pellets.
