After a great trip to the Jack Daniels Distillery with my father in law, I bought the last 3 branded unfinished barrels they had for sale that day and headed home.
To anyone who has not had the pleasure of touring the JD Distillery, you are missing a true piece of Americana. Its unbelievable that all the JD in the world comes through that one place. It was awesome!
Pics of my trip are here if anyone wants to peruse them:
http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m115/bbohanon/Jack%20Daniels%20Distillery/

Here are the barrels fresh off my truck when we arrived back home:

Closer look at the front and tops:

After some sanding, checking the barrel for leaks(it held water just fine) and applying some Golden Oak stain(You can see the other barrel getting leak checked sitting on its side behind the newly stained barrel)

And the top:

I have also gotten the screws into the bands and need to figure out how to best cut the top off tomorrow...Also need to hash out the charcoal basket as well.

I will post more pics as the build progresses and if anyone is interested in the other barrel, I might just sell it for the right price.
Smile

Skidder - The barrels were $108 w/tax. Apparently these are a hot item as I got the last 3 for the next day or 2. The fella said they sell them as quick as they can get them. You can also get an unbranded barrel for $85 before tax and they have a completed finished branded barrel for about $168. I figured I could sand her down and finish her for less than $60 bucks..Smile

slow&low - We certainly need to plan a get together. I am still on my diet, but cooking the Q is calorie free! LOL

The progress today: I got the barrel lid cut, got the u-bolts for the grill grate put in, got the nipples installed, and the hinge and handle installed. I also got the charcoal grate about 90% together. Hopefully I can finish it up tomorrow, take some final pics and get the 3 racks of ribs my son has been waiting on cooked on her for her inaugural cook. I plan on posting more pics tomorrow.

More to come!

Finished up the barrel today. Here is the final pics:

Pic of the barrel with the Old number 7 brand plug in the bung hole:

Hinge:

Charcoal Basket:

Grill Grate Supports:

Grill Grate in place(it was the grate I use on my UDS as well so its a tad dirty...lol)

Finished front with top

Finished front:

Teaching my middle child how to start a chimney for the inaugural cook:

Smoking away!

The inaugural cook was 2 racks of ribs cooked Trigg style that got burned to a crisp(BAD BAD BAD) and some chicken breasts that were awesome!
My first and last time trying the Trigg method. Put a damper on the inaugural cook for sure. The chicken was excellent though so I am sure the problem was not the barrel, but the Trigg method I tried.

Question for the rest of the WBS crew: I noticed as I cooked in the barrel that the lid started to not "seat" on the barrel as nicely as it did before the first cook(there was one or 2 areas I could slip in a nickel between the lid and barrel). It almost looked like shrinkage.

After the cook I noticed that the staves looked as though they had dried out a bit so there was a bit of gap inside the barrel between the staves(inside only, not outside).
Will re-soaking the interior of the barrel resolve the lid issue or will the lid always sit kinda "off" now? Its not a big deal and does not cause any issues cook wise, but I was just curious if anyone else has had this happen?

yeah man mine does the same thing I used a pipe jack and a rubber glove
I used the gloves and a rubber band to steal the exhaust stack and the jack to level the lid and filled her with water along with the base and she swelled right up and sealed. When I did a long 13hr cook it shrank up a lot.

How did you cut the lid off? Hope you can figure out a way to get the staves to plump back up. Good lookin barrel.

Filled her full of water(including the lid) last night and she is coming back.

I did the angle jigsaw cut to start the cut and once I was all the way through the barrel, it was smooth sailing with the jigsaw. I saw some peeps using a sawzall but I have never been very accurate on my cuts with a sawzall. A sawzall to me is a demo tool, not a fine cutting tool..lol

I just found a wine barrel in WA for $50 at a winery. Smile

I had the same issue with the lid kind of in reverse. The lid got warped during the build but bounced back into shape during the first cook. Since then it flexes a bit each cook but has not caused any problems.
Re-hydrating to me is the biggest pain to the smokers but hey, we are making them do something way beyond their intended use. Wink
