Check out my new toy!

I saw this contraption 4 or 5 years ago and thought there's no way it can be all that great. Well I got a bunch of Pecan last week from a very large tree and found that Pecan is much harder to split than the Oak I have on my property. After attempting to split one of the large peices of Pecan and just about doing my back in I decided I had to find a better way. As I was contemplating renting a splitter I remembered this little jewel and went to my good friend google. I found it, but could find very little in the way of customer reviews. I even did a search on Smokering and came up empty. It's called a Smart-Splitter and while it does take some effort it puts you in an ergonomic position which saves the wear and tear on the spine. As I already see my chiropractor monthly this is definitely a good thing.

I put it together and documented my progress.

I started out using a low stump to do the first few.

After I got a feel of things I got a taller stump to raise it up to my level and got to work.

This was the result of about 3 hours work. While it was work it was much easier than swinging an axe for 3 hours (not to mention that my back would have been having a major conversation with me after the first 15 or 20 minutes.)

This was my first experience with Pecan and I must say it is the hardest stuff I have ever tried to split. With this tool I'll be able to split as much as I can use between my stick burner and chunks for my UDS. And in case anyone is wondering, none of this is going to be made into charcoal.

I would want this even if I bought my wood split. It is great for splitting into smaller peices and making kindling with little effort.

And the best thing about this is it was $99 including shipping from

http://www.firewood-splitter.com/

That's the lowest price I was able to find on it. I have no interest in this company but when I find something that works I like to pass on the word.

Tomorrow I'll be stacking it neatly and splitting some more.

I bought one of these last year and love it! If any of you are on the fence….go for it. I am horrible with an ax but this makes it easy. Like the original post said its very good for splitting kindling.

There's a place in Shrewsbury MA http://www.spitjack.com that carries it. It is a little more expensive but if you live close you can save shipping.

As noted in the original post it is $99 INCLUDING SHIPPING at

http://www.firewood-splitter.com/

While spitjack lists it at $139. Even if you are local $40 is $40.......

Ok just ordered one ... $89 +$22 shipping on ebay. I found vendors that were selling from $89-149 and shipping was $40+ (I shake my head) so hopefully this will do the trick. 2x 45' tall hickory trees await!
