Just wondering has anyone noticed to prices of trailer pits on CL going up after this show started airing? A friend of mine mentioned it but I thought he hadn't taken into account metal prices going up.I think they would do better if it was on Food Network. More people watch that to learn tips and techniques. _________________ On the seventh day GOD didn't rest, he had a BBQ! |

I just sent this to TLC.com
"I enjoyed the BBQ Pitmasters, but it sure seemed staged and focused more on entertainment than actually BBQing, like most of your audience will be doing.
I belong to The Smoke Ring with over 11,000 members. Why not do a regular man's show without the $10k plus smokers. Get it back to the grass roots. Build a cheap Ugly Drum Smoker and have fun, both in the neighborhood and in competitions as well.
I know of many comp teams that run them, and they are the best low dollar cookers money can buy.
This would be something that most people can afford for a local comp or just a great friendly party. "
Maybe if enough of us chime, in it will be REALITY. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

Heck ya!! Take some average Joes and have them build their own pits then have them compete. Show all the little tricks and headaches that we all go thru. Might even pull some people out of the crowd at a comp and use them. Seems like there are tons of "Pitmasters" at every comp I've done. Show the guys and gals out there that enjoy good Q that its not as hard as the big boys try to make it look! _________________ On the seventh day GOD didn't rest, he had a BBQ! |

I'm with you JD Witt. Give them the barrels, already burned out, and the hardware to build their own UDS, then they have to build it, fire it, get their smoke on and let us at the smokering be the judge...and they have to cook ABT's only! _________________ UDS

They did do a BBQ show similar to what you're describing. Had a run of two seasons. Each week they took three of the competitors and gave them a pit and gave them an entry and they competed head to head. Did one in AR where they gave them concrete blocks and steel and they built their own pit. They did Whole hog one week, ribs the next, etc, etc.
I think this show was easier to produce because they used existing contests and just built them around what was there (the four KCBS categories). |

I thought it was a great show. I learned a lot from it and I enjoyed the characters, especially Myron, Johnny Trigg, Paul, Harry, Lee Ann ...OK, I liked them all. It is easy to pick on this show, but you have to remember that this show would not suceed in teaching BBQ alone.
We are now in the age of reality TV (which is evolving into nonreality reality TV). And if you put youself in the position of creator/producer of this show, you have to respect the effort that they made.
Even Food Network cant hold a show about BBQ instruction alone. Pitmasters chose some great characters - a sucessful oldtimer (Trigg), an arrogant winner (Myron), an innovater (Tuffy), a cute and successful chick (Lee Ann), a newcomer (Paul), and a relative outsider (Harry, Asian persuasin, from CA).
The number of posts on this board relating to this show indicate a job well done. They got our interest.
I know that the original series was only 8 episodes, and we saw them all. And it seems per their website that things are up in the air. But I loved this show! |

One more thing and I'll shut up about this post. I've posted a lot of things that I'd like to see changed but I did enjoy watching the show and sometimes watched an episode more than once. AND I would watch it again should it get the air time. I just don't think it will last under it's current format and I would hate to see it go away. I hope they tweak it a little to make it more interesting to the multitude of backyard bbqr's. Shutting up now.ZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPP! _________________ UDS

I watched a few episodes of it but it seemed like I was watching the same thing each week. No variety. One of the biggest turn-offs for me was Myron. What a jerk. I really enjoy bbq shows when they are done well, I enjoy going to comps and judging. But as a weekly TV show, I don't think there is mass appeal. The producers have got to have viewers, and a lot of them, for a network to keep it. If the network can't sell adverrtising, it's over. I was surprised there were not que specific advertisers on the show. A que comp makes a good occasional program, but as a weekly series, it gets routine. It really needs to be done differently, if possible. _________________ Scooter

But I'd still expect him to try to sell it to another network. |
He posted a Twitter yesterday that said season 2 has not been decided yet. _________________ -Scott

Jarhead, I used to work in TV so if you supply the UDS's and a plane ticket I'll bring the cameras and other gear
Really did enjoy the show, and quite frankly it opened my eyes to the world I'd been missing out on. The show premiered on Dec. 03 and by the 15th I had my first offset.
They will either make another season and I'll be happy and maybe pick up a few more tips - I saw very little mention of the fact half The Ring has made Trigg ribs now; or they won't make another season and I'll be upset. But at least now I know how to make a big PP sammy to lessen the pain! _________________ WSM 22.5"

Hopefully I'll get to see the cast of BBQ Pit Masters this weekend. There is a KCBS competition here Pensacola Florida this weekend. It is designated as the state championship, so hopefully it's worthy of the top dogs. There is only $5,900 in prize money though. _________________ Weber 22.5" Gold |

Probably not if that's the total prize money.
Next week is the NLR contest with $100,000 in money, they'll be there for sure, but that's a long way. Myron won it last year (but less prize money last year). |
