I hear what you are saying but there sure is a whole lot of those items that could be worked out a head of time, there could also be some stock shots used, the Joe Smoe shaking a generic rub over some ribs, butts etc, but those that are willing could say so and show what they want.
If you look at the information about rubs, sauces, etc that was on the show, most of the folks were using no name shakers to apply rub, we might think we know what was really in them, but do we have much to prove it? No we don't!
I wish I had the time, money, equipment and skills to put a pilot together... but I'm sure I don't have at least 3 out of the 4! |
I dont think that you could do a how-to bbq show and have 4 million people tune in and watch each week. I dont think that you have the time in 42 minutes to get into the how comp bbq is cooked and still generate the drama and friction you need to get people hooked. You can hit a point here or there but only if it moves the drama along. Muffin Pan chicken wasnt a how to, it was a plot element used to set up the drama of Myron confronting Paul. Same with the briskets...They talked about the wagyu briskets so they could show the tuffy helping myron shots.
I dont think that pitmasters was made to get me to watch a tv show about bbq...it was made to get my mom to watch a show about bbq. I am sure the OCC show was exactly the same thing. The people who built choppers complained about not showing enough of the how-to and the producers kept showing the arguing..because everyone else wanted to see that. |

For my two cents. Why not contact KCBS, MIM, ect. and have them include release waivers in the contest applications. Those that want to be taped would sign the release when they enter the comp. Then they pick 12 or so comps and have their "Pitmaster" teams enter and then they could show a better cross-section of the BBQ nation. Personally, I'd sign up but they probably wouldn't want to see me at 3:00 a.m. I don't have the fancy campers and make-artist like their guys do. Or better yet, make their guys take a Billy-Bob Q'er and use his equipment and see if they can still win. Ugly Betty(my second love) would probably make Myron stroke! _________________ On the seventh day GOD didn't rest, he had a BBQ! |

I like all these points. Switch things up from time to time. Make them cook on each others pits or a generic pit to see where their skills are.
Also, I would have liked to have seen the different types of pits and how they worked. Maybe some of that is trade secret but surely there are differences that could have been discussed in more detail...rotisserie vs R/F etc.
SoEzzy I agree with almost everything you mentioned but I do think that although set up and tear down IS boring they could have found some interesting things to point out about setting up especially. It would be good to see the amount of effort that is required to do so IMO.
There are so many things of interest about BBQ, I was disappointed they chose to only focus on the drama and not the techniques. I understand drama is a necessary part of it but they could have done better and who knows, maybe they will. _________________ UDS

they already did the shows where you cook on something different...it was on VS., they did 1 season and no one other than bbq people watched. That isnt this show. |

I'm not saying don't show it at all, rather show it the once or twice in a season, I hope that the valid points on here get back to those that do make the shows as something to think about.
I enjoyed the Chris Lilly shows 4 or 5 years ago, where they only had 3 cooks at a time and they did showcase different cookers for each show, but if memory serves me correctly, they were only doing one meat / show. _________________ Here's a change Robert.

I understand your point DawgPhan but if you mix in some of these extras you dont have to watch the same show episode after episode. Using different smokers is only one aspect of what could be interesting to the home viewer as well as the back yard bbq'rs IMO. Maybe I just dont know good TV. _________________ UDS

you know of all the people that have mentioned the show to me, not a single one made any comments about how to improve the show...not a one. Most of them loved Myron and his attitude, and none seemed that interested in the cooking part of it. |

It isnt about winning..it is about you want them to make a show that they already made twice and failed to get a second season with. It is also about that this show probably wasnt really about us. It was for everyone else and bending the show to what we want isnt going to help get another season. I would love to get into the nitty gritty of competitions. who cooks what, how they cook, the pros and cons of each cooker and all that, but that show aint getting made. |

That to me is the point DawgPhan.
There were 2 seasons of the Chris Lilly show but no 3rd, aimed mostly at the general public and not at the BBQ centered world, then there was the BBQ championship, aimed at the general public and not at the enthusiasts, and now BBQ Pitmasters aimed at... you guessed it the general public, and that's not getting another season.
This is why I think they should perhaps think about 30 minute shows like BBQ University, or Dinners, Drive ins and Dives! Good Eats, to name but a few, and make them more for those that have some interest in the whole thing from the word go, I know that if I saw a show like that, and there have been episodes of each of the ones I named, that were about "real" normal BBQ and I watched them... the funny part for me was the number of foodies I know that also watched them, far more than I'd have thought most of the time.
So the shows to my mind have been aimed at the broadest demographic and ignored the niche market demographic 3 or 4 times, perhaps a rethink and aiming at the smaller demographic would be a way to start, but then create a name and a stir and a ground swell, and maybe that would work? _________________ Here's a change Robert.

To your point SoEzzy there was a show/documentary on PBS called "Sandwiches That You Will Like". I liked it so much that I left it on TIVO. It is still there and I watch it from time to time. Wouldn't it be interesting to see an "All About BBQ" show/documentary?? that would somehow please the masses? Nothing wrong with Pitmasters BBQ but it would be nice to have a little more substance. Wishful thinking? _________________ UDS
