Been experimenting for many years on many variations of Q sauce and discovered a great way to add a nice " twang" to your sauce. Get fresh tamarind and after preparing as listed below, add to your Q sauce according to personal preference. Kinda like hot peppers, how hot do you want, therefore, how twangy do you want your Q sauce. A simple way to prepare the Tamarind paste:
1 lb fresh Tamarind.
1 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup brown sugar
Boil the tamarind in enough water to fully immerse for approx 15 min. Then take a potato masher and mash the tamarind into a fine pulp removing the seeds. This takes about 10 minutes, but you will be left a thick amount of Tamarind pulp. Strain the water into a separate container and after you have removed all seeds and thicker pulp add the pure tamarind pulp and water in large pan and bring to a boil. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer reducing this mixture to a thick sauce consistency, approx 30-40 minutes.
I think you will be very pleased and surprised on its effect on traditional Q sauce. Below are some pix:
