i am somewhat new to pistols....and am not happy with my tauras 45...although new it jams on every clip...
after some thought i like the idea of 357, shooting 38 rounds etc...
i was thinking the 686 model plus...
3 inch or so barrel for concealed carry,...
cant seem to find any around here...
saw a ruger for $500.00...is that a good deal, and what would be a good price and way to get the s&w?

Change the ammo you are using. I have noticed over the years that some pistols prefer a certain brand or bullet type. Some don’t like the disposable aluminum casings, some do.

I carry a S&W 669 9mm which has discontinued and I think replaced with the 6906.

YMMV

I onw a 686 Smith although it is a 4" barrel. It is a great weapon, and is better after some trigger smoothing by a gunsmith. Once I quit carrying it as a duty weapon, I had a Cellini Custom Compensator cut into the barrel by Vito C. in San Antonio. It's a sweet shooting wheelgun, I'd recommend it.

ive tried 4 or 5 types of ammo....i think the problem is in the magazines actually....the gun is nice....but im not happy about the reliablity issues...
the good thing about taurus is i can send it too them etc....
but in reality ...who wants to do that...maybe after i get the 357....
i sorta liked the idea of a hammer...so if i had to i could try and get one accurate shot off...
but i know there are experts out there...especially here at the ring...
so any and all opinions are welcome....

This is likely the problem. Go and buy a couple of Wilson mags. There not cheap but should clear up your reliability issues.

686 is a nice gun. So is the Ruger. Not sure if that is a good price or not.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I have a 686 S&W 4" S.S Target sights and I love the Hand Canon..Great firearm..

I also Have a Several Rugers..I sent My Red Label in to have the cocking rod repaired(Less than a year old) and they sent it back still brocken.
I love Ruger But that didnt sit to well with Me..
(It cost around $100.00 to ship a gun back to them)
I have heard alot of bad about Rugers Customer service.
I also know they do make a great firearm.
Of the 4 Rugers I own and shoot I have had no problems except with My Ruger Red Label..
Wouldnt that figure!
A Guy spends almost $2000.00 on a shotgun and it breaks in the first year.. Evil or Very Mad
Oh well it shoots good now.. Rolling Eyes

I have a 686 with 8 3/8" barrel, great gun. I carry a Ruger SP 101 with Crimson Trace, it is the perfect size for a carry gun just a little heavy. If you are just looking for a carry gun the S&W guns are hard to beat. I got my wife a 637 CT, it is the perfect size and weight, it is 38 not 357.

I love my Springfield .45 I use it for my personal homeland security. For shear stopping power a .45 is the way to go....unless of course we're talking a stagecoach double barrel shotgun. Very Happy

I will relieve of that taurus.
Actually it is the magazine. There is a Taurus firearms forum that has fixes, dependent on your clip model. I have had few problems with all of my taurus firearms and i can shoot just about anything through them no troubles. YMMV.

The magazine is probably the problem, and most government 1911 magazines should work well in your Tauras.

Me… In a second! Have you talked with Tauras about the problem?
Have you had your Tauras to a good gunsmith?
Have you been to a range and tried a couple different magazines?

After break-in, the Kimber 1911 -is- a sweet gun. It is also twice the price of his Tauras. If price wasn't an issue, I'd double the price again and go for a NightHawk!
45acp: Because shooting twice is silly.

Self defense guns:
You should never use hand loaded ammo for a self defense firearm.
Lawyer for the dark side: "Let me see if I have this right. Plain old factory ammo was not DEADLY enough for you. YOU had to load up special extra-deadly, murderous, assassin ammo. What kind of sick fiend would do that?"
Using anything with the term “Magnum” is equally bad.
Lawyer for the dark side: "So you weren’t happy with a regular defense gun like a .38 or even a 9mm like the police use, were you? No! YOU went out and bought a murderous extra-deadly “MAG-A-NUM” assassin’s gun. …”
For home defense I like my 10ga SxS. “It’s just an old hunting gun that only holds two rounds. And it was the only thing I had handy.”

Your right, the instructor for our concealed carry class said a good thing to do is contact local law enforcement and use the same bullets they use. I use 38's in my SP 101.

Whitey,

You need my address to send that Red Label on over?
