Posted: Feb 19 2010 Post subject: GOT WOOD?!?!?!?! (Part two) |
|
|
So, as some of you know, I scored about a cord so far of free Live Oak this week. I hope to get at least another cord secured by the end of this weekend. On my previous thread, I took a couple of photos of my score.
I have stacked the wood in a closet in my garage, that doesn't get much use at all. A couple of Ringers busted my chops (LOL) about storing the wood in a closet. I think they felt a tad better when I explained it was the closet in the garage. LOL
It was pretty funy to read the comments, and I no they were joking...BUT...can all of you post photos of how you store your wood??? I need to find a way to store this as I am going to tear down the closet to fit in a chest freezer. Please post photos of your wood so I can see how it is stored...TIA and looing forward to the photos....
P.S. I can see this thread going downhill fast!!!!!! _________________ 1 homemade UDS smoker

Most of it just sits outside to season. When it's ready (and sometimes before) I will cut it in to chunks the size I like to use and put it in 10 gallon buckets.

Sorry I just couldn't resist. I store my wood (never mind, my brain is thinkin' again, in the gutter of course)
I leave it in the woods, and go get it once a month or as I need it. OR like now, I ran out and it was too muddy to drive back there, so I had to go buy it.
Soooooooo
Build yourself a rack, keep it off the ground and allow for air circulation. Cover if it is going to rain.
EDIT: Check this out, just make sure anything that touches the ground is treated.

Definitely keep it off the ground or it will rot where you are. 6" or so off the ground is ok. Actually, I stacked mine on the ground for years and it was ok except for the very bottom layer. It needs to breathe so don't cover it with a tarp but try to keep it out of the rain. Just try to keep it dry with good air circulation. _________________ Brinkman Smoke N Pit Pro

| BigPhil32, the pix shown on the link that Uncle John sent are rack I built in about 2 hrs. Very easy and they are modular (easy to disassemble) if necessary. Pressure treated 2 X 4s and 1 2X2 treated ballister. If you are interested, I can send you the link to get the $3 plans. I don't feel it would be right for me to send you a bootleg copy as the guy in good faith made them availabe for such an incredible price. The nice thing about these rack is that you can customize the size to meet your needs. The racks in the picture are 4' X 8' X 12", essentially a face cord. |

| I got a entire 75 yr old red oak tree in Nov. Sometimes work with a tree trimmer on the weekends and he asked me if I wanted some Oak. So I fugured he would just give me a few big branches like he always does, let me take entire tree. Have only split the trunk so far but lots of Oak. Stack them on pallets to keep them off the ground, works out great, got good air flow all around. |

I picked a mix of oak and maple in the fall and it got plowed in before it got moved out back. By the end of next week the snow will be gone and I'll move it on to pallets and cut and split in the spring. We've seen a weasel around lately, it may be living in the wood pile.

remember to store wood where the air flow is good....helps dry it faster.
some folks single stack it in direct sunlight & cover with clear plastic to 'sweat' the moisture out. _________________ This stuff ain't rocket science,,,Great Gramma cooked on a horizontal-partitioned wood smoker every day! |

| what I do with my firewood is stack it on skids to get air under it. I also cover it with black rubber roofing. In the summer the black get its warm enough to really dry it out fast... |

| The wood can be kept inside, it needs circulation if it is inside or outside. If you store it outside you will need to keep it covered or when it rains it will get wet. I do not know for sure but have read that wood needs a year to season for cooking. Keeping it inside is definately not a bad thing. |

Splitting, stacking so air can circulate through the stack and covering the wood if rain is forecast are all good ideas. If you are storing it inside, say in your garage, you may need a dehumidifier, especially if your garage is not air conditioned. Here's a page with some helpful tips.

I have three half-cord-plus racks. I'm working on the middle rack now for firewood.
I had three trees taken down last month. It's over a cord split, and is in the closest rack and stacked on the ground. It will all go on the rack later this spring.
Here's a better view od the three racks.
This is where the three treees were. I split the logs on the stumps.
Yes, if you noticed ... that is Bigfoot.
The largest of the three trees was 20 inches across at the base.
The firewood is stored behind the garage. I want to take down some of those pine trees, as they block the winter sun from the driveway. They are in my neighbor's yard, though.

Wet/green wood in a closet for long, with out fresh air circulation makes me think of mold and insects.
I do the 10 gallon bucket thing with 2 inch holes around it. |
