On the termite thing, I burn firewood in my house as primary heat and unless you are storing the wood in your garage for extended periods of time(more than 2-3 months), you should not have to worry about termites. In colder weather, they tend to stay in the wood and be less active so they are not going to all of a sudden go commando on your house, especially when they have good source of wood to eat on that they are already inhabiting(if they are even in the wood at all).
I would NOT advise storing it for in there any longer than 2-3 months, especially once the weather starts warming up..that's when they start to "swarm" and if they do and the wood is in your garage, it could spell trouble.
The thing about termites that folks don't know is that yes they cause damage, but they are slow eaters. It takes quite a while for termites to do serious damage to a house. Usually if you are getting a decent termite inspection once a year from a trusted bug man/company, you are good to go as they can catch any termite infestation well before it causes serious damage.
I had termites under my house about 5 years ago under my concrete garage slab. The house was only 4 years old and this was before we were heating with wood. Cost me $900 to flush/treat as they had to flush under the slab. They never made it into my house..
At any rate, sounds like you got a T O N of smoking wood so enjoy! _________________ An AVID UDS Supporter/Builder.

Dave C, my apologies, just noted you are way north of here. You definitely have some challenges during the winter period. If you notice the racks, they store the wood very efficiently and do not take up much space. All you need is a skillsaw and a screwdriver and you are set. ....

Nice job for sure. Those racks look good, you will be set with plenty of wood for smoking, remember to give it some time before using that hickory.........I actually never use pure hickory, I like to mix in a little white oak and recently scored a nice load of water oak which has a very mellow aroma but burns pretty hot so I think it will be a good combo with the hickory.

bertram31...something I did a few years back when trying to cure wood is to build a canopy over my wood stack. It was a very simple 4x4 post on each end with a 2x4 connecting the two. I then simulated a pitched roof to cover each side of the wood stack. Instead of shingles I used clear plastic and when the sun was out it intensified the heat on the logs, drew out moisture which condensed on the plastic and dripped off the edges away from the wood. When it rained, the wood was mostly protected and it kept me from having to run out and pull a tarp each time I saw a cloud coming. Back then I had a woodstove inside the house, now I have an outdoor furnace which negates the need for curing wood so the I no longer have anything to take pictures of but it was very efficient, user friendly and easy to build.
Dave C...not sure if this would work for you in your climate but i live in the mountains of SW Va and the snow load was not a problem as the roofs were pitched and the size of each one was fairly small. _________________ UDS

Bootlegbbq, great idea and one I will give some serious thought to. I am renting now where I am located. I am in the military, but may consider your idea and make it so it can be easily disassembled. Thanx.....

Shag bark has a thicker bark than the bitternut and also fewer limbs. It usually lives a quiet life in moist and somewhat open areas.

Here is a photo of the wood drying setup I made. There is an opening on the low side and an opening the same size on the high side. It gets very warm and works real well.
