Saw this at BigLots. I am going to get one in the morning and see if the lid fits and how good the grill is.

My dad called and told me about finding one where he is. I was looking at it online and saw that we have one in town. I didn't even know it was here.

Picked up the grill at Big Lots. It fits perfectly on my closed head drum. It was too small for my open head drums. The lid is right at 23". It has a hook so you can hang it from the UDS and not set it on the ground. Not a bad deal for $29. You also get a grate that is ceramic coated and a charcoal grate that you can use for your fire box. I might try later to bend the lip over on the bottom half of the grill and see if I can use it for a lid for my open head drums. I am sure I will find a use for the other parts as well.

That is a great deal, especially if you can make 2 covers and 1 set of grills. Keep me posted on the results. Time to go in business and make a bunch of them uglies and sell em on CL. Wink
BTW, thanks for the post.

I'll use the wheels on another smoker I've built for a friend.

I just picked mine up at the Big Lots here in Virginia. I was a little dubious that they would have grills with our 4 feet of snow, but they had their whole summer stock rolled out and there were plenty of these on the floor. I had been crusing Craigslist for another weber for parts, but this seems to fit the bill. By the time you figure, lid and grates, this is a really good deal to outfit the UDS.

You must be a little more north than me here in Virginia Beach cause all our snow has finally melted....

I went and picked up a grill from Big Lots last night, too..... I never knew they carried things like that. There was a huge selection of grills and accesories. Now it's time to cut the top off and start burning....

Got the grill out to test the lid... It's a little tight for a fit. I think with a quick pass of the angle grinder or even a little hammering it should fit nicely...

I am glad that so many people found this helpful. Now, if I can just find a national retail chain that has 55 gal drums.....

Very helpful txluke. I went and got one the day you first posted, I was building a uds. Perfect timing! I got home, saw the post from smoke'em, and now it's on it's way overseas to help ! There's 2 Biglots here in Colorado Springs, I'd bet that's two more than they have where smoke'em is!

I bet he is going to have lots of extra parts. I sent him 2 grates and some bolts.

A buddy saw my most recent UDS build/experiment and has almost decided to kill his Weber and turn it into a UDS.
Thanks for posting about this BigLots find, it could save the life of an old friend, well the Weber at least!
Thanks more for posting the pics with the lid fit to the close ended drum.
Very close indeed.

Some previous posts on the forums about UDS showed a Wal-mart option. I tried that and ended up having to make many modifications for a decent enough seal.

I'll be hitting the local BigLots soon, I'll try to get something up once I know how it works on my drums.

Before 12th Ave posted I was out the door and on my way, the closest Big Lots was open til 7pm. I had just enough time.

Measures within 1/16th or 1/8th of a inch of 23" lip to lip on the Lid.
Just a hair shy of a Weber Kettle lid.
It looked close enough for me.

As I examined the display unit (basically disassembling it and measuring everything) I really think the bottom could be modified pretty easily to become a lid too. Nice thing is, the bottom is deeper than the original lid.

So I took the last 29.00 grill they had and headed home. Tear open the box, get that lid over to a couple of drums I've made and some I'm working on. It fits nice and snug for me.

With the right drum or a little modification I think these 29.00 Big Lots grills are a good thing.

I'll try to get my geek on later in the week and post some pics

I found some barrels on CL for $15/ea and now will go pick up one of these. Got a BigLots 5mins from me! Between the barrels, the BigLots grille, and my modded ECB I should just about be able to build it with parts on hand.
