I absolutely believe that naptha fumes linger in a cooker and end up in the food to a noticeable degree. So I haven't cooked with it for at least 20 years.

But I think the only way for you to come to any conclusion is to try cooking without the lighter fluid for a couple of successive cooks. And my bet is you won't notice any difference.

BUT: If you then go back to using lighter fluid, my bet would be you'd notice it with your first bite.

[edit] And, fwiw, the same applies to charcoal: I switched to hardwood lump for the unadulterated flavor, and never looked back...

Cheers!

Gentlemen,

I buy lighter fluid ALL the time and I USE it QUITE A BIT when I am out at the deer camp with wet wood...

Gotta have a campfire. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Seriously, try what day_trippr said and you'll see that it does linger... The $20.00 chimney will pay for itself before long...

I just can't think of a good reason to use lighter fluid. Any more than I can to boil ribs. Miron brags that he lights his fires with it, and wins a good bit. I wonder if he ever stopped to think that if he used lump in a chimney he may do better.

This show was hilarious. I loved it when the smoker builder put extra cayenne on the ribs. He sprinkled it on. Hell, after the s--t the judges said, i would have poured it on, not sprinkled it.

Myron pours 5 gal on that trashy Blue Bag K and no one says a word about tasting it. Lee Anne don't and and her food tastes like it. Don't make no sense unless it got into the ceramic on the Egg but I was under the impression that BGE's where glazed on the inside. I' m scratching my head on this one.

They are glazed on the outside, but not the inside.
I've used a chimney starter, a little cooking oil on a twisted 1/4 sheet paper towel, a propane torch and a map torch. NEVER lighter fluid.

I find lighter fluid evil, everytime my neighbour sparks up his little kettle,I can smell and taste that fluid in the back of my throat for the rest of the day.He starts cooking on it before the flames even die out. Very Happy I have told him a hundred time to at least let the coals ash over a bit and burn most of the fluid smell off, kids don't want listen. Laughing

Guess Leanne should've hauled her rig down, eh?

And the thought that someone 'cracked' an egg with lighter fluid?! Sigh....

If I could only afford one I'd give it nothing but good ole' wood Twisted Evil

Okay maybe I go to the extreme with my chimney. I figure that I won't put anything in my smoker I won't eat, eat out of, or off of. So when it comes time to light "Ugly Betty" I will put a pile of potato chips under the chimney and use them to light it. The greasier the better!Doritos work too but take longer to light.

it wasnt lighter fluid that the guy the judges were tasting, it was a poorly burning fire. Every time this comment comes up it is a poorly burning fire, guys see it all the time on a comment card and get confused by it, but it is that their fire wasn't burning clean. Leeann's case was probably because she was running hot in the BGE and started shutting everything down to get the temps down. Fighting with the temps and adjusting the dampers alot are going to cause your fire to not burn cleanly.

If you think that the judges could taste residual fluid from a previous cook, but could not taste the whole bottle of lighter fluid that Myron used while cooking, I have got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you..

it's the same group of you guys that continue to amaze me with how little you understand what is going on.

The lighter fluid tasting food came from a BGE using lump charcoal and either a chimney starter or paraffin cubes and the guy that used blue bag kingsford and lighter fluid didn't get any comments about that lighter fluid taste.

I think most of the comments made here were about just how ugly using fluid to start your charcoal is in general.

Does anyone know if the BGEs were seasoned or new. Lord knows that "new cooker" taste is pretty rotten.

I dont use lighter fluid, use a chimney and some veggie oil and paper towels to get my fire started. I dont care if people do because I know that if used properly you can't taste the difference. I know it, because I have done it, I see others do it, and last night on national TV I saw it documented that even picky as hell judges, who had already mentioned it once, didnt taste it. And to top it off they said they tasted it when it wasnt there, which has happened countless times with the comment cards.

The fallacy that you can taste it is simply that, what you taste is a poorly burning fire. But I knew last night when I saw the judge mention lighter fluid that the message board gang would be in a tisy about it...

I must admit I rather enjoy this lively discussion. I have used lighter fluid with Kingsford a million times and I have used lump started in a chimney a million times. I personally cannot taste the difference in my meat and I consider myself to have a fairly discerning palate.

But maybe that's just me.....

or maybe DawgFan is right, it's a fire that has been choked out by lack of oxygen.

I dunno....
