Posted: Feb 04 2010 Post subject: Oil Fuel Tank Build Design |
|
|
I have been wanting to build a pit for a long time now. I have looked at everyone's build's on this site with envy but have not had the resources, time, or space to do it.
However over the last two weeks I have started looking at what I have available to me for free and tried to design around that. The design I ended up with is actually better than what I was wanting (i think).
So again, this is with materials that I have available to me. I have two different options but basically they are the same, just different firebox configurations.
Here is the one that I really like.
And here is one modified to make it easier to mount the firebox.
My plan for the vertical smoke box is to have the exhaust actually go through the walls of the vertical smoker instead of out the top. My thought process behind that is this makes the smoke stay in a little longer to give anything i put in there legitimate smoke.
I do plan on having diffuser plates in the bottom of the oil fuel tank and also thinking about a slide out tray for charcoal in case I want to grill on it.
Or just a tray to set on the diffuser plates for charcoal.
What do you think about it? What tips, advice, things to watch out for should I keep in mind on this design?
Anyone have anything similar to it?
I just have to set the time aside to work on it as the place to work on it is about 2 hours away. But again, all the materials and tools that I need are there. I just have to learn to use them correctly.
Thanks for the help.

Hello Pig, if you shoot me your email I have pictures that I believe will help you out with your build. I can't load them from my pc but, I can load them in a email. I think you will like what you see. I'm thinking about doing the same thing with a oil tank. But, I'd like to find a 250 gal propane tank and I'm finding it very hard to find one here in Indianapolis IN. In fact I can't find one!!!
Let me know what you think?
Hope it helps you. |

I wish i could get the pictures to go bigger, but this looks awesome. Its more of a DP clone though. What I am thinking about is more of a traditional reverse flow offset.
I just dont know if I will get uneven heat distribution, fuel ineffeciency/fuel hog, or have other problems I have even though about. |

| Yeah, you're right. There are a lot of unanswered questions about this smoker. The title of that site is called Redneck BBQ . I'll try to get the pictures so you can enlarge them to see better. Good luck on your build! Let me know what you come up with. |
