pyronoel, your cooker is looking fantastic. I like your gussets on the inside of your door. That is a good way to help tame a stubborn door. Very nice work. I look forward to seeing some more updates. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

I like the gussets, BUT aren't they going to hit your shelfs? _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!

k.a.m. Thanks
daddywoofdawg - When I build the shelves inside, I will start them about 1/4" away from the sides so they clear. They will be drawer style sitting on angle iron slides. |

I came home with a monster this morning!
-Edit if anyone has read this in the last hour....
Going to use this as material to build a charcoal grill 74" wide, about 2' deep, 2 shelves, with a lid.

Looking forward to seeing this build I know where a tank like that is and sounds like something I could use. _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!

I told my wife I needed the van yesterday to pull the trailer, so she took my car... that always gets her nervous wondering what I'll be coming home with.
I sent her a text that morning... "remember how much you love me when you get home" |

LOTS of progress today, just not many pictures. Ran out of light. But I did get a couple with my phone...
Go the RF plate DONE today.
Bottom Grate DONE
Around the firebox, I put a piece of flat steel flush with the outside. The door will mount to that against fiberglass rope to seal it. This will let the bottom of the firebox be 100% open for clean out.
My brother came by and had a great idea for the flu....
4.5" 1/4" square pipe I had.... it sits on top of the firebox, with 1" of it inside of the smoke chamber. This will heat the flu, hopefully for better flow.
Inside, holes will be cut. - there is a 1/2"-ish gap just above the RF plate and then 2 more holes will be cut about halfway up - one towards the back, one to the front. Plan to cut the holes about to make sure they add up to more sq in than the entire flu.
Here is the flu not welded in, just sitting there.
Grate: 48" x 20" --- learned today, 4x8 expanded metal is actually 48.5".... learned that after I made my grate to accommodate a 4' piece.

pyronoel, your list of things to do is growing short and your cooker is looking fantastic. I will be watching for more updates. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Your build is coming together now. That is a nice touch for heating the exhaust tube. Keep up the great work. You are going to end up with a fine and relatively high capacity smoker considering the size of your tank. |

Took another half day off work to get more done. Last weekend it rained, this weekend it will rain and be 40..... yesterday and today was 65 and sunny. Could not let it go to waste.
Today I got the door to the firebox on, the flu completely welded in with the inside hole cut, and the 2nd grate in.
Just below the hinges, I put a piece of 1/4" x 2" angle iron the length of the pit. This was plug welded in. - Strengthened up the hinge area, and gave the upper rack something with beef to weld to.
Punch List for phase 1:
Firebox: Fire Grate, Damper, latch, top opening lid and grate for steaks.
Flu: Damper/rain stop
Grill: Front work table
Then more additions to the trailer.
PICTURES: (many more taken, here's a few)
Grill with both grates:
I needed a strait edge to cut out the inside hole to the Flu. I welded that to the pipe, then welded a handle to that so it wouldn't fall inside and cause grief.

pyronoel when I looked at the big new tank you are planning on making into a grill you said it was 74" long and about 2 feet deep. My question is how tall is it? And do you know how thick it is? And by the way do you know what the tank was used for? I know someone who needs to fit a cooker into a very specific foot print on his trailer and that particular tank looks like an almost ideal starting point for his needs but he does not know where he should be looking to try and find a tank like that. Thank you in advance I look forward to your responce. |

Jon,
The tank is actually 74x64.
After looking at it for a while, I think my plan is to cut it in half long way. Cut off the bottom about a foot up, then use the off-fall to build a bottom and back.
Here is a quick ROUGH sketch:

Thank you for your quick response. Do you know how thick it is? Do you know what these particular tanks were used for originally? |

It was used for waste oil. and it's a round tank, not oval as my rough sketch may show.
Not sure of the thickness, haven't cut into it yet.
Previous owner put the tank over a big bon fire and did a pretty good job of emptying the inside. I shined a flashlight in and just saw dry rusty metal.
Will still give it an air purge before cutting. |

YEAH for DST! Extra hour of light when I get home is just enough to motivate me to drag out all the tools.
Top door to the firebox is on. - Still going to mount a big thick plate to the top for a warmer.
Once it was dark, I also got the entire main door seal welded in. roughly 12' of beads. 2-3" at a time as not to warp anything.
I'm not skeerd of the dark
