After watching last night's pitmasters I was wondering if anyone North o' the border might know where I can pick up a suitable blanket to throw on my CharGriller? Planning a brisket for Sunday and Im thinking a little insulation wouldn't hurt. _________________ WSM 22.5"

I use a welding blanket on my CG. Works great. You can pick on up at Harbour Freight or similar tool store. _________________ Thanks, Andy

I have not used one myself, but a lot of folks are using welding blankets purchased from Harbor Freight. Hope this helps. _________________ Kill a cow, Start a fire ...

I use moving blankets from harbor freight, real cheap,
just keep away from the fire box. Have made them to fit all my cookers.

I made my own. "Fireproof" welding blanket type material on one side, Quilted Thermafleck {ironing board type fabric} on the other side. On Smoke setting, the cooker temp is about 30-40 hotter with the blanket.
The Thermafleck is good to 400F, and conceivably you wouldn't need the fireproof stuff. I was playing it safe. Also Thermafleck can be used to make insulated carrier things, like a couple of the Pitmasters are seen sporting on TV. _________________ Traeger 075 "Big Tex"

Blankets are for kids ...I live in Canada and cook all winter long,no blankys on my cookers.I will admit that I have used a wind break from time to time.Just throw an extra log on the fire,or ditch your water pan,or open up the intakes a little more.

Do you do quilting also? Just kidding, that blanket is real nice. This forum is the best for showing off your ingenuity. _________________ Kill a cow, Start a fire ...

Pittmattster I see you are in Calgary, thus, no Harbor Freight. Try your closest welding supply, or as suggested make your own. But if this weekend is must go then as Canadian Bacon said, just give her a wind break and a little more air. _________________ My memory isn't good enough to lie.

I live in MN and go year round. Cold isn't your enemy, wind is. A few weeks ago it was -20 for a high and I was cooking. I have a barrel smoker and use plywood for a wind break. Some people with barrels use a 55 gal barrel with the top and bottom cut off and place it around the cooker for a wind break.
I guess during competitions I've seen a lot of guys with moving blankets or welding blankets. Our competition pits are a big ole Klose and a Jambo so we don't have much problem. We do use moving blankets once we take the product off to keep it warm in cold temps. |

I made a Quilt once for my Mom.
This is more along the lines of what I sew. And no.. that aint a Goose.
Pipers prefer to pay $50 for $5 worth of Velveteen or corduroy, a Cover that doesnt fit very well... or have the extra heft & feel that mine do on a Gortex zipper bag (which is made with $5 worth of Gortex, and sells for $200 something now} . They also prefer a dreadful looking knockoff of the way I seal the back end. So anyway, there are sweatshop workers in China that make more money sewing than I did.... and since I made something that will last forever... I dont need to make another one. I did sell exactly one Leather cover, and a desert camo cover to a Psychological Warfare Specialist in the Special Forces. If that 2nd Infantry patch looks like tight fit... you shoulda seen me putting a standard sized unit patch along with Airborne, Ranger & Special Forces tab on. _________________ Traeger 075 "Big Tex"

Glad I can wear shorts year around and not have to worry about stuff like that! The problem we have in the summer is trying to keep our smokers from over heating because it is hotter outside than in the smoker. |

Here in Florida, my (ex)offset would read 150° in the summertime when I wasn't even using it! Cold smoking is pretty much out the window around here. _________________ "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits" - Albert Einstein |

Wow, a lot of responses to the thread
As with all things I think I will need to experiment a bit. I'm going to head over to the Princess Auto (it's unbelievable what you'll find at this place) and hunt around for a welder's blanket.
In regards to the wind thing I have a nice little setup in the yard that pretty much takes care of that problem.
Really what I think I'm after is probably a little more efficency out of my fuel _________________ WSM 22.5"

Hey Tony ,It's time for a paint job, You should be ashamed of yourself. |
Why would I paint it?...Would paint make it cook better?

Just tugging your chain about the paint Tony ,I know they don't have to shine to cook well. Check out these paint jobs.
