|
I stumbled upon a lot of wood right near my house. Not sure what it is. The tree it came off of doesn't look like a maple tree.
I am in Connecticut, if that helps. Unfortunately, I do not know what the leaves look like from this tree.
Any ideas here?
Thanks in advance! _________________ Connecticut Huskies - 2014 National Champions! |

My guess would be black cherry.

Interesting!
One thing's for sure, this tree doesn't bear fruit. I'd definitely see it on the ground somewhere - pits and such.
I've seen this tree during the summer and know that it doesn't have fruit. I just always thought it was wood I wouldn't be able to smoke with, so I never really paid attention to it in detail...That's why I don't remember what the leaves looked like, although, I know for sure it's not maple. _________________ Connecticut Huskies - 2014 National Champions! |

Good Eye, Mike!
Cherry Trees were planted up here -scores and decades ago - some of them planted during the Work Progress Administration program
(W.P.A.) during the late thirties and early forties.
No surprise some of the older ones do not put out fruit...but they will flower
every year...sometimes they exhibit pea like fruit.
Great smoking wood! (of course, after portioning and seasoning!)
Best Regards,

Thanks for confirming!
Good thing I scored a lot of this stuff. I won't be able to use it anytime soon but I will likely be able to try it in late summer.
Are all cherry woods the same flavor, much like the flavor profiles of (various) apple tree? _________________ Connecticut Huskies - 2014 National Champions! |

Just found this regarding Black Cherry wood:
| Quote: | | The leaves, twigs, and bark of black cherry contain cyanide in bound form as the cyanogenic glycoside, prunasin. During foliage wilting, cyanide is released and domestic livestock that eat wilted foliage may get sick or die. |

No problem - I didn't see any foliage in your pics - never mind livestock
A quickie Google shows Black Cherry wood/chunks/chips being sold for smoking use, and Black Cherry wood planks used for cooking. I think you're good to go...

Well, if your last post is something like "Hey y'all - about to try that new wood I scored awhile back"... then we'll know it was not such a great choice! |

| I'll be using Cherry tonight for my 120 lbs of butt's, 120 lbs of brisket. I'm sure it's fine, bark and all. |
