Phil's sister:

I'll skip most of the health advice (my mom is BIG on that, in an annoying way) but if he is unwilling to help himself that's about all that needs to be said.

That B-Day meal for instance made my eyebrows go up..........................

But what the heck, he's a grown man, and stubborn or not probably isn't stupid- he knows his options.

Like my sis said...dad is kinda stubborn. Wink
He is a tough ol guy though. Most of us would have been long gone if we'd been through what he has. I swear he's the energizer bunny reincarnate!

This is Phil's sister.I am dad's care taker more or less and it is like talking to a wall trying to get our father to understand what he needs to do. I try to help him manage his diet but I can't be there every second with him, he is one stubborn man! We love him amd will do what ever it takes to help him, some days are just harder than others. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah it's tough. I boxed up all the canned veggies, canned soup, bouillon cubes, canned beef and chicken broth (unless it's low sodium), Clamato, Beefamato, bottled tomato juice, and canned meat (Spam, Sardines, Herring, etc.), Tony Chacheres, etc. and took it to a food pantry.

I about lost my mind when the nurse was trying to explain to me that he was mildly diabetic (no sugar), the CHF (no salt), and then tried to give me the song and dance about heart healthy (no fat). Well sister, you cut out all 3 and there's nothing left. You can cut out one, or MAYBE two, but cut out all 3 and you might as well put me in the ground.

So I made meals that were full fat (within reason), went a little easy on the sugar, and I made all my "cuts" in the salt. You just use lots of spices and stuff to make things interesting. Brown the meat/veggies to give some flavor. Fortunately it turned out that the 'mild diabetes' was just blood sugar fluctuations while in the hospital and his A1C (long-term diabetes test) was nominal.

Frozen veggies are great. BBQ is fine as long as it's low sodium rub. Steaks, burgers, fish, etc. is all fine if done right. Fried or boiled eggs are fine. Spaghetti is fine if you get a low-sodium sauce. Some of the cottage cheese is really high in sodium so watch out and read labels. Parmesan is high, but you don't eat enough of it to be a problem. Generally someone with CHF has a lower appetite. The problem was my dad going to the pantry and popping open a can of sardines, or eating a bag of saltine crackers, or a can of Campbell's soup.

The real nightmare scenario is going out to Applebees or something and loading up a full plate of food there is like 4,000mg of sodium. My dad's legs were visibly swollen the next day. A 2 piece dinner at KFC is 2,000mg (daily limit).

Hang in there and try to make stuff ahead in the fridge like soups he can just reheat. We did lots of chili (Adam's makes chili powder with no salt), potato-and-leek soup, chicken noodle soup, steaks, grilled chicken breast, etc.

My thoughts are with you guys!

Today was a bit crazy.
I did my usual Sunday supply run to Sam's Club,
went to my BBQ to do prep work, mopped the floor,
and then took a trip to my father in law's house
to pick up a load if hickory logs.

After loading the wood in my truck,
I let out their dog for a while.
Then I almost put off unloading my firewood
until in the morning but I decided to go ahead
and go back to the shack to unload.
GOOD THING I DID! Shocked
When I pulled into the parking lot I
noticed water pouring out of my building from the bottom,
from just about every direction!

I ran to the door and when I got inside
the water was an INCH deep covering the entire floor!

It was coming from the bathroom.
I had a short hose with a sprayer hooked up
to the utility sink for rinsing the mop,
and had left the water turned on but it dosent spray
until you squeeze the handle.
The hose had swelled up like a balloon and busted!
Water was shooting 4 ft across the room!
What a mess. Lucky for me I still had the shop vac there
from when I had cleaned out the grease trap a couple weeks ago.

It took over an hour to get all that water up.
Just think...if I had went on home instead of going back there...
the water might have been coming out the windows by morning! Shocked

Phil, please give us an update!

How is business?

How did the price increase work out?

Are you able to manage your work hours?

Hey,
Business has been picking up since it's warmer out.

The price increases are working out just fine....no complaints, still seeing new customers and regulars.

As of today we are rated #62 on Urbanspoon's Top 100 Best Restaurants of Columbia, MO!

In the past few weeks I have had new customers almost daily telling me they came to my BBQ out of curiosity from my positive reviews and rating on Urbanspoon! It's the best advertisment I have had so far....and I didnt even have to pay for it. You sure can't beat that. Very Happy

I would imagine that this is going to be the trend of the future thanks to Google and Smart Phones.........

Great to hear things are finally picking up for you Pete.

You also need to remember that social networks and sites like Yelp & Urbanspoon can be a double-edged sword.
If someone feels slighted, they will typically weave a a tale of disgust as long as their leg. The Internet gives every bunghole in the entire world a mouthpiece to yell it from the hilltops!

I do not know if Yelp still offers a paid feature where you are able to edit reviews, but they used to. So if someone wrote a not so flattering piece about a place, for a $300.00 membership they would let you edit those posts.

It may not be bungholes. It may be legitimate concerns. I take the negative comments very seriously when I read restaurant reviews.

That said, what you say is certainly true - You may remember that early on on this thread, there was a customer who searched his way all the way here to voice his dissatisfaction with not getting served at Shotgun Pete's. (I guess Shotgun Pete's was not on Yelp or Urbanspoon at that point)

I remember that guy. He kept showing up AFTER I was closed and then would complain.
If I go to a place and it's closed one day and read the hours....I know that if I go back again at the same time tomorrow it will probably be the same!
Shocked Laughing

I DID have my hours clearly POSTED in the window, so to me it made no sense for him to complain. Get here sooner...when I'm open.
Every business has posted hours and if you show up after hours....guess what...you don't get served. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I was in fact on urbanspoon back then.
I also make every attempt to serve every customer, but once I have the securiity grates on the windows and the food all cooled off and in the fridge, ran my totals and put away the money, etc. I'm done for the day.

If I have JUST closed and still have warm food and the windows arent all locked down...then I will make every effort to accomidate the customer who shows up right at closing time, ...but not 30 or 40 minutes after closing time. That's just not normal business and isnt very practical.

I have adjusted my hours a lot since then. I do stay open longer and also run on Saturdays now too (as long as it's not storming).

I go out of my way to please my customers. It's not worth it to treat anyone bad or run someone off. I wont do that.
Im very happy when someone is at my BBQ wanting my food. It's a great feeling.
If they buy something and don't like it I offer them something else...if they don't want something else I happily give them a refund (if they didnt eat all of it already) Wink

It's impossible to please everyone....but I do try. Very Happy

So, what are your hours these days, and can you make it work with your medical condition?

I open at 1130 am Monday thru Friday. My sign still says I close at 6 pm Monday thru Thursday and close at 8 pm on Fridays, but I have been staying open till at least 7 pm (sometimes 8 pm) when it's really nice out.
Saturdays I open at 12 Noon (weather permitting) and stay till about 7 pm (later when we have a car show), and am still closed on Sundays.

We have a classic car show now on every 2nd Saturday of each month from now thru Sept. There is also a dj playing 60's and 70's music.
We had about 30 cars this past saturday. We think each weekend the number of cars participating will increase. I did pretty good this past Saturday with the amount of customers from the car show.

As for my health....I have a pretty good handle on how to control my daily workload so I don't get behind and overworked.
Always prepping menu items ahead every day make a big difference.
I make my wal mart runs in the evening if needed and do Sam's on the way to work in the mornings. It works out great.

I am so happy to hear that. I read the saga about Shotgun Pete's over Christmas. It was a real page turner. There were times when I was very worried about where your business was heading, and how much you work you had to put in to make ends meet. I have been following your posts ever since.

Is there a standard that Dads are supposed to be stubborn? I have one of those too!!! But since I'm a daughter, I can get a way with more of telling him what to do, or if that doesn't work, I get the grandkids after him....it works almost every time. Smile

I loved reading this story Pete - congrats to you and I'm glad to hear your dad is doing well.
