Just curious but is that the finished size of your firebox? I've been following your build. It is looking great. I'm just wondering about the firebox. It looks like it would take a 1/2 cord of wood and then your temps would be off the chart. Are you planning to make a smaller box that will fit inside and insulate between the two? _________________ Sam Diggity's BBQ

Hey everyone...
The smoke box is 4 x 4' and 2' tall.
It will have a fireplace grate inside it to hold the charcoal & logs.
This grill is a 3 fuel cooker, meaning that it uses, Charcoal, Wood, and Gas all at once.
The wood and the charcoal are in the lower chamber (firebox) and will be used for smoke and flavor of the meats.
The upper (cooking) chamber will have a LP pipe burner underneath a heat shield.
The pipe burner is for temperature control
I will only need a 10 lb bag of charcoal and only a few logs per cooking session.
This is the same system that my dad's grill uses and it works very well.
People have raved about his bbq that came off that grill for years, so I figured why not do what he showed me works.
As for the air intake vent...I kept it the same diameter as the smokestack, which is 3.5'
I figured it could only draw in what it can put out. ..and if I need to I can crack the firebox door open just a tad to let in more air.
That's how my dad's smoker gets it's air...from not closing the firebox door completely.
I spent the entire day applying aircraft paint remover and scraping the old paint off. That old paint was on there Im telling you.
I thought I'd never get it off there.
We didnt sandblast because it would have blew back on us too much because that would be the only way out for the sand.
If any of you ever use aircraft paint remover....WEAR A RESPERATOR, EYE PROTECTION, LONG SLEEVES, HEAVY DUTY GLOVES, AND A HAT.
That stuff is seriously strong.
I got a little bitty drop on my wrist and it sent me running for a water fawcet! It felt like a fire was on my arm no lie.
Anyway we power washed it up good after all that scraping and then dried it out with a big portable gas heater.
Here are a couple pictures after some paint.
It's taking just a little longer than anticipated but we think tomorrow we will actually get it all put together.
FIREBOX....

What about make up air for the propane burner? Also why go through such and awesome build and expect to run it with the door open? I think you would get more control with more intake vents and if you don't need them just leave them closed.
YMMV

I think this is good advise, before this one leaves the shop give yourself some added venting, you can always leave them closed, but I would not want to run a unit with the fire box door unlatched. Your on a tight schedule, but take a moment to think this one out, may be beneficial down the road. As always wish you the best with your endeavor. _________________ Rod |

We got the smoker painted and put together today!
We will give it a test burn and cure this weekend to see if the vents are adequate enough to run it.
If it needs more air we will add another vent somewhere.
Here is a first look of both sections, welded together and painted...

I'm using BOTH smokers!
The big smoker for ribs, briskets and butts.
Dads' for smaller cuts like the chicken quarters, burgers, smoked baked beans, etc.
It will take a little trial & error to see what cooks best on which cooker,
but the main reason I built the bigger smoker was to accomdate Ribs.
They tend to take up more space on the grill and
I didnt want to have to do all of that shuffling around to get the job done.
...and I really wanted to build this smoker!
It make's for a more interesting set up.
Not one, but TWO cool BBQ rigs! _________________ Reverse flow smoker made by my dad "Shotgun Pete" Peters over 30 years ago!

My sister is going to take dad on Saturday. He is excited about it and is lookign forward to seeing all the different BBQ teams and thier smokers.
There are about 45 teams competing!
My sis is going to try to take some pictures. If she does I will post them here. _________________ Reverse flow smoker made by my dad "Shotgun Pete" Peters over 30 years ago!

...after the great day I had today...
LOWES finally called me with an estimate to install a 40 gallon $250 water heater. Remember....
(remove a 2 gallon tank and extend the water lines
a few feet and add a down spout pipe towards a drain)...
Their contracted plumber said to install it to city code...
they wanted $1100.00 (included the water heater, labor & parts)!
I told them they were out of thier minds...
after parts that would be about $600 or $700 labor
...for a 1 or 2 hour project at the most!
I will find another certified plumber who really needs some work
and let him have the project....geeez! _________________ Reverse flow smoker made by my dad "Shotgun Pete" Peters over 30 years ago!

Great looking comp pics, glad your dad had a great time!
I've met Myron a few times, great guy.
I enjoyed seeing the pics of your place reminds me of my trailer- compact.
Like the others mentioned, please be careful when you start actually playing with fire in your new cooker.
The intakes look small, and there is little make up air for a large propane burner.
The burn will also differ if you have other fuel burning besides the burner.
You may also find the the chimney is too small.
Or it may work perfectly right out of the box..............................
Hard to say till you get it going. _________________ BBQMAN

Depending on where you'll put your cash register build a U shaped shelf wide enough to hold your micro and place the shelf upside down U over the cash register and place the micro above on the shelf. You gain some unused space.I have put in a couple of waterheaters before and it's pretty easy all your doing is hooking up the lines and let the electictian wire the wires.the drain is just some copper pipe that comes off the top(I'm thinking your pressure releif valve over to the drain.look it up on line hoe to install one it's really simple.and I would think the code would be that tough. _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!
