Anyone going?

We haven't been in a long time and got invited to join a team this year "DAMNIFINO" and so we'll be cooking a couple of categories with them.

http://www.hlsr.com/

It will be the 25-27 and a big party.

Let me know if you're competing or will be dropping buy. We'll be having some fun, since we don't have to do the set-up.

We'll be cooking in the San Antonio Rodeo booth. I don't know the number though.

woof woof.

If I posted the pictures of the full service bar, wait staff and all the other stuff, you'd be calling me other names. Cool

Met this team AND the winning team from last year (both attended the Dec FE class) and both wanted me to cook. Well since Fast Eddy may be cooking with the other team, I'm going with this one. If for the name alone.

Just sent you to photos, too many to post. Maybe you'll have to come through Houston that week.

Is there a way to find out teams that already signed up? If they will be there?

Check their website, I'm sure they'll update it, or email them direct.

I took a look at the website some.

Is this open to the public if you are not competing just to visit and maybe taste some BBQ?

If not, can I get an invite from someone? Wink

I might be in Houston end of Feb early March so trying to decide if I want to try to make my trip overlap this. If I had to pick one day, should it be Thursday, Friday, or Saturday?

Yes, it's open to the public. Now I've not been in a long time, so someone with more recent experience can help.

Here's what I've been told. My understanding is many of the teams actually sell to the public (you ought to see the list of rules). It's not my team to invite you to, but if you're there, stop by and ask for Smokin' Okie.

I believe the team I'm on get's pretty popular, as they sell DEEP FRIED RIBS. I'm sure lots of teams have different things they sell.

I think Thursday is the Party night when most of the teams are catering to their sponsors, but the event is open to the public all days. Friday would probably be fun, with a mix between parties and teams prepping for the Sat contest, but Saturday, don't stop by, that's competition day and we won't be talking too much while we're in the "competition zone". But you can still walk around, as the teams will still have people serving the public.

It's a HUGE event in Houston.

umm I don't believe teams actually sell their food. I might be wrong though, my brother-in-law is on the committee so I'll check with him. Thursday is the sponsor night so most teams won't be taking in any extra guests.
The cookoff is open to the public but the team tents are private and you'll need a wristband from them to get in. Each tent has off-duty cops working security at their entrance. Well, each team that has alcohol. Now, once you're in the tent, the food and drinks are free. Outside of the tents there are vendors selling food and drinks, that's why I don't think the teams sell food. If you're going to be around Friday or Saturday night I'll have an extra wristband for you. I just got on to a team called the Lost Village Cookers, and my family is on the Goose Creek Cookers. Just ask for Dennis

I'm still looking as trying to go..

They've updated the website:
http://www.rodeohouston.com/events/bbq/schedule.aspx

They make it sound like every day is a good day to go.

Talked with my team lead last night, talked about the 4 entries we'll be doing since we have 4 sites, that gives us 4 entries.

The tent is on order, 7,000 sq ft. HUGE.

We'll be arriving on Wed so we can buy meats, etc that we haven't already. Gotta age those briskets.

We'll post more info before we leave and please stop by to say hello.

Russ

We're curious as to how many teams were there, since we couldn't find it on their site. Also curious as to what it pays, since it also is not listed on the site.

I'm going to be competing in the Houston Rodeo Best Bites competition the weekend before that. Pretty much all the best restaurants in Houston will be competing.

If any of you guys have a couple extra wrist bands, I would love to stop by.
