well first off, hello. I've been looking back and forth at this forum for months, but recently just joined.
last spring i made this smoker/grill from a Weber propane grill i found on the side of the road. I have now fallin' in love with smoking ribs!
Fabricated the fire box, Exhaust stack, Louvers, intake, and all wood accents.
Now for my next project, my friends father wants me to build/fabricate/design a drum smoker for him.
I plan on building it horizontal, and i need some help with figuring out the firebox size, and exaust.....
The drum it self is 34 1/2" by 23 1/8 Diameter.
The smoker will be around 30" off the the ground from cooking height to ground level. The fire box will be directly underneath the drum. with 2 intakes, and 2 exhaust.
One other thing you should know is that, the thickest material i can work with is 11g. ( little bigger then 1/8 ) That's the maximum capability of the tools/machines at my shop.... i work at a sheet metal shop
any information you can give me is good information. thanks |

Cool looking smoker. Any photos of the connection between fire box and the top of the smoker. What kind of connection did you use? Thanks |

I forgot to mention, I've experimented with a few different types of wood, apple. cherry, hickory, mesquite wood. not all charcoal
And emil, this is what the connections between the 2 look like
Any advice for a firebox size on my new smoker plans...? I tried to look at that smoker calculator diagram on Microsoft Excel, but it got the best of me. |

Sounds like the dimensions for a 55 gal drum? I smell a UDS or DBS.
Great looking build you got there. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

I have a single 6" dampered exhaust in the center at grate level on my DBS, that is 36" tall. If you want 2 then get a muffler shop to bend some 4" tailpipe for you. Put a raincap on top to keep the weather and critters out. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

I go with 1/3 the size of the cook chamber. _________________ Never met a cow that I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

Awesome smoker you got there.
Gotta agree with Teleking though.
Dump a 1/3 full chimney of lit charcoal on top of a pile of cold coals (mixed with 6-12 fist-sized chunks of hickory, cherry, apple, etc.) and it will burn reliably for 4-6 hours with no lighter fluid smell. |

nope, sorry not me.
The lighter fluid is just to get the beginning coals started. Those pictures were also the first BBQ i had on the pit, at the time, i just had a little bag of mesquite wood.
Today at work, i cut open the 55gal drum. next is figuring out which way to do my hinges.... keep ya' posted |
