What many do is to fit a ring of metal inside the top lip of the drum, and form that ring to fit the inside of the kettle lid. You could screw, rivet or weld the inner ring to the drum - whatever you're geared up to handle...

Cheers!

Or...Hammer out the lip of the existing "donor" lid until it is flat around its entire periphery.High-temp rope type gasket, such as is used on wood burning stove doors can then be cemented in place on the bottom side to make it airtight.

It's been done before...just my two $.00

Tony I think I'm going to try to hammer it.... would it be easier if I can get it hot? Would the metal be easier to bend?

If/when you go to hammer out that lid, make sure you wear eye protection to protect against any flying porcelain chips...

Cheers

You can also save the integrity of the donor lid by mounting a strip of metal to the inside of the drum- thus getting it to the correct dia.

As long as the grates still fit into it you got it made.

No...I don't think it would be worth the effort to heat it...they are generally made of mild steel and should be fairly simple to flatten it.

If you haven't already attempted it, I would use a pair of wide jaw pliers, such as lineman's (electrician) pliers and first use them to "unbend" the lip and then use the hammer and back-up block to then finish the job.

Of course day_trippr brings out a primary safety issue! Eye protection should be worn whenever striking tools are utilized.

If that lid is anything BUT a Weber, it is probably not porcelainized, but eye protection should still be used.

Take some pics and post 'em up here...Good Luck!

What type of barrel do you have? One with a lid you can remove or a barrel which you had to cut the top open. I've found that barrels with a removable top the lip ring is too thick.
