I'm from Cleveland MS, smack dab in the middle of the Delta.
Been going to the annual Octoberfest here in town since I was knee high to a grasshoper. Had never given much attention to the BBQ competition until my wife convienced me to help judge a few local events. My wife and I are both working on being certified MBN judges. One more whole hog judging and we'll both be complete.
After going through the class and judging a few competitions I convienced a couple of buddies that are just as dumb as me that we could compete in this BBQ thing. We found us an old 250 gal propane tank, stood it upright on a 6 foot utility trailer we bought for $40, and so was born the Sir Mix-A-Lot Smokers.
We only competed in two local events this year. Pig Picken which is a very small competition held during the local college's home coming events and Octoberfest. Placed third in Chicken at both and took Grand Champion in the patio division at Octoberfest.
Plans are to stick to the local amatuer events for the next couple of years to see if this is something we really want to pursue. Then ultimately our goal is to chase after the big boys on the competition circuit. We've got a long row to hoe before we get to that point, so I figured I'd be able to find plenty of advice from the experts here at the The Smoke Ring. _________________ Sir Mix-A-Lot Smokers "We like big butts!" |
