Don't know how many of you have followed the build log under the cooker section - but I sold my old Smokey Joe backyard smoker and commissioned MrCustomSteel to build me a backyard vertical I could use with a BBQ Guru Cyber Q and get some rest while practicing at the house.

Anyway - as usual - D did a FANTASTIC job with this build! She cooked really even and is built solid. Just sayin - if ya need a custom pit - I'd stand by D's work any day of the week - thanks for another great pit D!! I really enjoy working with D on designing the cookers he has built for me - he's always open to ideas and thoughts and we usually come up with a great design together. I highly reccomend his work. No....D is not paying me to advertise - LOL!

Anyway - here's the pics of her maiden cook! We did 2 butts and a brisket and it went over well. I was playing with new rubs I ordered from Hawgeye's a few weeks ago - so it was a lot of fun. I took all the 'Q over to a friend's house where he was having his daughter's 2nd birthday party - got a lot of compliments - and not much leftovers - so must have done something right Smile

The meat was smoky but not oversmoked...which I really liked how the new cooker cooked everything. The meat was moist and turned out pretty good overall for my first cook on her...anyway...on to the pics!

Here she is at her new home with a little snow/sleet coming in while working on seasoning -

Firing her up for seasoning -

Holding 300* To Season On The Guru -

I was learning the pit and how to hold 225* for my cook from 4p.m. until midnight - at midnight - the charcoal basket looked like this - still plenty of fuel left - and this was after an 8 hour burn - can you say EFFICIENT!! -

Pork Butts all rubbed up with the slabs.com pork rub -

Brisket all rubbed up with Plowboys Bovine Bold -

Everything in the smoker -

Had to get a pic middle of the cook -

Almost there! -

Butts Are Done -

Brisket just about there! -

Those are some pretty butts - LOL! -

Brisket all done and glazed up -

Just had to make burnt ends - mmmm!! -

Brisket sliced at the b-day party -

Burnt Ends At The party -

Pulled pork with some of the slabs.com sauce mixed in, pretty tasty! -

I was really interested in the I/O from the grill to the computer.

Rather than the picture of the screen ... use Ctrl+Printscrn (look to the upper right of your keyboard) and then paste the result in your favorite photo program. Also JetScreenShot (jetscreenshot.com) works really well too. Consult your local computer professional before installing any software that some idiot on the forums tells you about.

Looks to me like that cooker is gonna ROCK!

I'd say it is very fuel efficient and from the sounds of it holds the temps well too!

The meats looked wonderful and plenty moist.

I've enjoyed following the build and can't hardly wait for more action shots of its work!

Yeah - I was being lazy (I do IT for a living) and just took a pic of the screen - I can send ya print screen if ya like the next time I've got it up and running. It's pretty interesting to be able to change temps on the smoker and not even go outside. I cranked her up from 225* this morning to around 275* and never stepped outside...very cool! Plus I like napping and if the alarm goes off it woke me right up to check out what the issue was.

As IT person, was a lot of fun to tinker with and so far I have enjoyed the guru. There's a couple of minor issues - but nothing I can't live with.

reefermadness - THANKS! I thought it was a good way to test drive it - let's go for the long haul and see how she runs Wink The guru certainly makes likfe much easier - load with lump and set the temp.

SmokingInTheLou - Thanks for the compliments! Happy to share - always nice to pass along success stories. D, as usual, did a fantastic job - no worries there at all!

Cranky Buzzard - she is REALLY fuel efficient - 8-10 hours should not be an issue with this cooker - I got about 5 hours sleep last night while doing this cook - and the guru graph showed an even line all the way across - aka - same temp - never budged. Pretty cool IMHO.

Canadian Bacon - Thanks! Always glad to see ya stop by - appreciate it!

thanks for following the build and the first cook - we sure appreciate the support - always fun sharing with you guys! And as always, appreciate the compliments!

I thought you were an IT guy from memory of past posts (and the Office Space avatar). Have you looked at http://hruska.us/tempmon/ ? The wife and I are going to build that once the holidays are over.

Yes - in fact I've spoken with that guy via email - and we talked about it and so forth - I was really looking at the as an alternative to buying a stoker at one point for my comp rig - not so much to control with the blower as to monitor multiple temp probes on one screen - that arduino will make things much easier to build. But I just haven't gotten around to working on it - but he's a REALLY nice guy to chat with - post a build log if you do build it, I'll be very curious to see it!

Will do. I am excited to do the build and hopefully come up with some additions to the existing project. I also have deep and dark fantasies about handing an MBN onsite judge a circuit diagram and some C++ source code when asked about my pit.

caliel - I'll look forward to that build log - I LOVE your idea of handing that over to an MBN judge - talk about a WOW factor...neat idea!

SierraScott - Thanks - I appreciate it!

BigPhil32 - Thanks - ready to have more fun with the new toy asap Wink

Andy Reese - Thanks - I thought it was pretty good for a first run on a new pit too - still got a bit more tweaking to do do, but it was pretty much an easy cook - which was the point Wink

Vexter- yes I followed the build- you guys did a great job on the cooker, and the food looks great too! Cool

But I need to be the first to comment on this:

Quote:
I sold my old Smokey Joe backyard smoker

OMG dude, WTF did you do?! Confused Shocked Wink Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing Laughing

You mean you sold that classic, along with the missing door handle, missing temp gauge, and custom fitting doors?

I just can't believe you let er' go my man....................................

BigAL - Thanks!!!

BBQMAN - Thanks and ROFL ROFL ROFL! Yup - it was time for the creosote fitted doors, no themometer and hard to lift door because of no handle backyard smoker to go - HAHAHAHAH!!! She served her purpose well - but in the end, didn't live up to the SJ hype - it wasn't the best smoker out there - HAHAHAHAH. You crack me up - thanks for dropping on my thread - Smile
