Wow... what a year... my memorable moments...
-Winning my first GC in Clarmemore, OK in a tough field of cooks and not the most forgiving of weather. That, I will never forget.
-Seeing Kosmo win his first GC in Ponca City and getting his hands on an FEC-100 which he was so close to buying even before that contest.
-Stillwater, OK contest (note to self..... drinking whiskey straight out of the 1/2 gallon bottle before noon at a BBQ contest is a bad idea)
-Tulsa Art of BBQ-seeing Mike of Butt Lover's BBQ win his first RGC. And cooking solo at that.
-Bedford, TX contest. Oklahoma represents!!!
-Jack Daniel's 2009 - Something I never thought I would ever get to do, and I got lucky enough to get the draw my first qualifying year. Great contest, great time, great party, once in a lifetime experience. But I'd go back any chance I got!
I'm sure I'm forgetting things, but I would like to say thanks to all the folks that make BBQ competitions such a great time. If it wasn't for the great friends and great times we have... would we really keep coming back? See you guys next year.....

We got started in comp bbq this year and our second contest was my favorite...Even though the weather was bad, we managed. We were satisfied with our chicken, I panicked on my ribs, and we were excited over our brisket. Low and behold we got our first call on ribs that placed fourth. And lessoned learned...Do Not Drink Apple Pie on Friday Night. _________________ Weber Performer 22"

Dover DE in October has to be the worst time to hold a comp!!!!!! 30 deg weather, rain storms, almost loosing our canopy,,, but one of the best time I've had!
This was our first comp and had NO idea what to expect, smoked some ABT's and fatty's over a fried egg for 2 guys who had no idea what they were, and even got a call!!!
In the awards tent, sittin there hearing everyone elses names being called, they called us for 2nd place in chicken,, we lost it!! I think we made more noise then the GC of the day!!!! Then the wife goes," You better getup there and get your prize!!!"
Definitely goin to remember the first one!!! _________________ All Qued Up Competition Team

uh, things NOT to remember from 2009.
Getting the call during turn-ins in Claremore that our house got robbed. You ought to see that last couple of boxes and packing up and leaving.
Missed being out in '09.
Work was a #$@%, but I did get the #1 rating from my manager last night for his team. Since that pays more than comps, I'll be happy with that GC... LOL |

We had a blast helping out - and getting to meet you - thanks for letting us be part of it! We sure appreciated your hospitality! |

Wow - you guys had some great moments - no doubt about it!!
For me this year -
Having my wife smiling and cheering me on when I take a walk - love that one!
Watching my team grow this year and ending up in the top 8% overall on the Pickled Pig ratings - for a 2nd year team - I'll take it! I'm so proud of my team and how hard they've worked this year!
Watching those same team members grow and understand competition bbq and become as hungry as I am to compete.
Calling Okiejay after each comp and letting my mentor know what calls we hit and how we did - always makes me smile!
Bringing out 'the general' to her first contest and taking home rgc (backyard comp - but TONS of fun!)
Talking to veterans at the last comp of the year (for us) and getting compliments from them saying 'people know who you and your team are' and things like 'you guys earned a lot of respect this year' - I about fell over - LOL - I had NO idea that anyone even thought that way about my team.
Showing up at a comp to have someone ask if we were 'H*QUE' - when I said yes - they said 'awwww sh!t' and walked away - LOL - made me really laugh!
Hangin out and helpin Jeff Hughes at Laurie - learned a lot and made a new friend along with having a lot of fun!
Watching and cheering on 'Smoke This BBQ's' first GC at Columbia, MO - after 5 years he took the GC at the first contest he ever did - those tears were real - and really hit home with me. And becoming friends with them on the circuit just sweetened the deal even more.
Walking the stage 2x's at MIM with the Norwegian team - what a RUSH!
Getting 2nd place ribs and only placing a few points behind Munchin Hogs at The Hilton.
Taking a walk for brisket and getting the nod of approval from mrcustomsteel when I took the call - Mr. Texas himself - and having him along to see that I'm a serious cook and can back up the talk with the walk I have a lot of respect for him and to have him realize that he built a rig for a serious competitor meant a lot to me.
Working with mrcustomsteel on both my comp and backyard rigs
Enjoying various comps in the area with Ringers - love the camaraderie!

My most memorable comps from 2009
Making friends with the couple from New Zealand and caught out in my golf cart in the hail storm at Claremore.
Winning the Pork at Art of BBQ and surviving the heat and margaritas
Getting stopped by the highway patrol in Missouri headed to Springfield running 93 pulling my trailer and talking my way out of it somehow.
The 2 AM "Screaming Education of BBQ" I got from Darby Neeves at the IBCA in August.
Teaming with Jeff Hughes at the Royal and Making some major business changes for both of us in the near future, the sky is the limit. Look out BBQ World.
Supporting Kosmo in his new business ventures, helping anyway I can. _________________ Cody's Construction Crew

As a first year team I would say the best part was meeting so many other Ringers. Thanks guys for all the support and fellowship.
Our first calls at Anthony, and the Ponca City comp was a great one from the time we rolled in until the time we left. _________________ Naughty Nurses BBQ

My most memorable event was taking First Place in Brisket at the Hot Springs, AR contest in Sept. For a Newbie, it was exciting and encouraging to say the least.

| I just happened to be walking by the front of the crowd on my way to the restroom when they called out 10th in Brisket.(This was a comp that calls out ticket numbers not names) Everyone was congratulating me and I hadnt won anything. After my trip to the restroom they called my number for 1st Place Brisket. Nobody clapped at all for me cause they thought I was on my way back. Crazy! |
