Josh started this thread on another forum, since mine mostly had to do with Ringers, I thought I'd bring it over here...
Being there first hand to see Stu and Kosmo get their first GC's, a 5am fatty and biscuits with my great buddies Mike and Don at most every comp, shots with Andy Groneman and Todd Johns after the Royal Open, getting to know Cody and Don Cook, big improvements in my scores, and a major career change all were really great parts of 2009 comp cooking...

2008: I will always remember the Ada, OK contest in 2008. The rain, wind and lighting just kept coming. Mike was holding one leg of the Ez-Up and I had the other one. Also my first contest cooking solo.
The 2008 Jack Daniels contest, I was there to see Butcher BBQ score 1st in Pork and 4th Overall never saw Martin so excited in my entire life.
2009: I was at the contests where Stu, Kosmo, Don and Robyn get their first GC. I learned a lot from Little Pig Town(Scot taught me all I know about Chicken) , Butcher BBQ, Jeff Hughes and of course Mike Hays which I teamed up with in July to form PigDawg.
I have met some of the best cooks on the contest circuit and they was always willing to help me if I asked. Competed at contests in Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Indiana met some really great people that all love BBQ and have a real passion for it.
Had some success with Ribs and Pork this year and looking forward to 2010. _________________ Team Enoserv

Oh yeah, having Vexter and wife help me at Laurie was really cool. I took 11th of 77 in a super tough crowd, and having them be a part of it was really neat. Cooking solo can be fun, but sharing the glory with friends is really neat... _________________ Klose 72" Mobile

I think the most mileage this year has to be the one about some pink shoes. That was this year in the early spring. Don't you think so Don. _________________ Trust Your Butcher |

OMG you are right I do try and block somethings out. It was at a IBCA contest here in Tulsa. Ritter BBQ got up a calcutta and I bought Butcher BBQ. He won the contest and I won the calcutta. I gave the prize money to my wife Paula and she was so happy and went out and bought her some pink shoes that she had been wanting but would not turn loose the money.
She saw David at the next contest in Stillwater went over and thanked him for the pink shoes. My wife has told this story so many times and just loves those shoes.
David,
Paula needs another new pair of shoes so get your game face on the season is just around the corner. _________________ Team Enoserv |

Having my Wife and Daughter at almost every comp we did this year, it's amazing how even when I don't do as good as I would like, one smile from my Daughter puts it all in perspective!
Watching my close friend Darian of Kosmo's Q win his first GC at Ponca City and also win a new FEC as part of the prize.
I may not have been there to see another close friend of mine Stu of Stu's Q win his first GC in Claremore, but just hearing about it made my day!
I would also like to thank Scot of Little Pig Town and Jeff Hughes for all their positive comments and support. It was their motivation that got me involved and gave me the drive to compete and stick with it!
Happy Holidays to everyone! _________________ Joshua S.

Good thing you joined forces with Mr.Hayes and let him take over chicken, chicken may the end of me.. Hard to beat that chicken you cook, according to my dad anyway..
I had so much fun this year I don't know what would be on top, probably Bailey winning that sweet trophy at Cody's contest... _________________ Hot links ! The other white meat. |

2 times stick out for me the Claremore hail storm. Stu and I holding down the EZ up. And Ponca City, and to think I almost left that comp early. LOL Met a lot of great friends and learned a lot from the host of arse whooping teams in this area. I think 2010 will be just as fun if not funner (always wanted to use that word). _________________ www.KosmosQ.com

2009....met some more good people, seeing Stu's GC was great, the sideways hail storm at Claremore was "impressive", we had a few good scores on ribs & brisket- which was opposite of 2008...and chicken and pork..well .... missed Darian and Don & Robyn getting their GC's but I was sure grinning when I heard about them- great job ! really, lots of great moments, as the last 2years have provided too. Lucky to have lots of great cooks and friends in this area !!!!!!! Thanks guys...
We won't ever get to do enough comp's but really look forward to what we can do , and thanks to all mentioned in this thread as you've helped us alot over these 3 yrs and hope to enjoy the hobby of ours for many more years ( Jeff, thanks for the "push" to get me started...!) _________________ Livin' at the Edge of Adhesion, till Smokin' Time.. then it's OSoSlow: Chillin' Time!

Oh, how could I REMEMBER ?!? notice I didn't bring that night up ! ( Mike, Josh..thanks for helping that night) That proved the point that it is possible to imbibe too much - and I won't have to go there again _________________ Livin' at the Edge of Adhesion, till Smokin' Time.. then it's OSoSlow: Chillin' Time!

Let's see what was memorable for me this year......
Getting the opportunity to meet several members of The Smoke Ring and being able to glean a bit of knowledge from them. There are a lot of good people on here and out on the bbq trail.
Having a call in a category in 4 out of the 5 contests I cooked in (Bordertown Bash doesn't count).
Being able to help organize Bordertown Bash, not lose what's left of my hair doing it, and being crazy enough to sign back up and help organize next year's competition.
Going through a severe thunderstorm and hail at Claremore without losing any gear.
Hearing my father tell me he screwed up by not listening to my cooking partner when they did Bordertown Bash.
To David, Josh, Jeff, Don, Mike H., Scot, Capt. Caveman, all the others I have met through The Smoke Ring I wish you Happy Holidays and look forward to seeing you out on the trail next year. Hopefully 2010 will be more memorable.

Winning GC at the San Antonio Rodeo BBQ last January. That was the high point for sure.
Starting my own BBQ team last April.
Getting my new mobile comp rig in June.
Cooking my first solo contest in October. _________________ Zilla

All the competition talk really makes me want to get out there and do it! It sucks I live in CA (from Seminole, OK originally) BBQ comps are few and far between out here. Anyone know of any comps out here? _________________ Steve Williams |
