I just got into smoking and I have had some sucess doing it. My neighhbor came over and offered me all the oak and cherry wood that I could use if I would smoke him a Butt every time I cooked. He owns a cabinet shop and keeps all of the scraps from everything he builds. I agreed and today he brought over two 50 gallon trash cans, one was filled with cherry and the other oak. Best part about it.....he is buying the butt..........

That combo is my all around favorite. Followed with oak and apple next. Oak is great all by itself.
Nice Score!

That's a pretty good deal... I would have to modify it though. I would suggest that you offer to smoke something for him each cook, but not necessarily a butt. There will be times when you just want to cook ribs or chickens or other stuff that does not require a 10-14 hour cook that a butt takes. My $.02

I'm with James as well, but still a GREAT deal!

For those that haven't used oak, you are really missing out!

I have to agree. I have to say that right now it is my favorite wood for grilling and smoking. The blue and black oak here in California makes some mouth watering eats. Oak smoke on pork ribs is tongue wagging good.

Oak is the nice cousin to hickory.
It can play well on its own or well with others....

Oak and Peach is a tasty combo. So is Oak and Apple. As well as oak and Pecan. Oak and cherry is a good one too. Mesquite lump charcoal with Oak tossed in with it is deep and rich in smoky goodness. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
