| I have built a smoker and I am going to rebuild it with some help from yall's experience and design calculator. (more details later) But tell me this for now. How important is it to get the inlet of the smoke stack at grate level or below as opposed to attaching it to the top of the smoke box? Does this help retain heat in the smoke box and make it more manageable? |

Welcome to the forums kc!
The differences between a high exhaust and a low exhaust are as you say with the control of the heat and smoke and the draw on the flow of both through the smoker.
If you have a high exhaust, there is little to hold the hot air and smoke in the cooking chamber, and there can be a tendency for them to come up from the firebox and exit immediately through the stack, with a lower exhaust in the cooking chamber, there is more move around time for the smoke etc, but you still get a draw through the pit as a whole.
Because the tendency for heat and smoke to exit almost immediately on a high stack, you will have more problems in temperature control than on a lower exhaust in the cooking chamber. _________________ Here's a change Robert.

| Thanks for your reply, I will have a lot more questions later plus specs and a picture of my smoker that dont work so good. It has a fire box that was a fireplace insert(that I'm kinda proud of because of its looks)But I got a little stack at the top and Iwork myself to death trying to keep the temp up. I just didn't know enough when I built it. |
