| Hey All. I'm attempting to match a sauce which combines open pit, and some other ingredients, without using Open Pit. I believe I've gotten fairly close to the flavor however there's something missing. Its what gives open Pit its unique tangy flavor. Does anyone know what spices they taste from open pit? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. |

It's got to be some form of vinegar. _________________ "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits" - Albert Einstein |

I realize Open Pit is probably the butt end of jokes regarding bbq sauces, but it is what my mom always used, so I grew up with it and still like it.
It definitely has a distinctive flavor, but I have no idea what it is... What I really like to do is mix a tiny bit of A-1 into Open Pit Original.... Ain't gonna win any competitions probably, but does bring back memories of my mom grilling chicken on the grill for a Sunday afternoon summer treat! |

Ahhhh, Open Pit. This brings back childhood memories for me as well. There were not very many barbeque sauces in Michigan retail stores 30 years ago but Open Pit was one of them.
Blech! Man, that stuff was wretched. _________________ If the momma isn't happy, then no one is happy.

I ran across this recipe but never tried it. This was posted as a close recipe to Open Pit but I never gave it a try.
This was posted by Jim AKA Midnight Plowboy
Barbecue Sauce Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups water
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup tomato paste
1/2 cup vinegar
3 tablespoons molasses
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over high heat and whisk until
smooth.
Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 to 60 minutes or
until mixture is thick.
Cool, then store in a covered container in the refrigerator overnight so that
flavors can develop.
Happy New Year, Jim
