Here are some pics of my smoker. I didnt do a lot of research before I started building, just built by the seat of my pants.
Please excuse the dirt, it has to be stored out in the weather.
I made a prop rod to hold it in one of 2 partially open positions, or fully open.
The door seal is made with a 5/8 round bar around the opening, and 1" channel around the inside of the door.
I added a deflector plate to even out the temperature across the length of the drum. It also doubles as a charcoal grate if I want to grill.
Made a frame of 3/4 angle to seal off the cut edges of the drum. I sealed the gaps using a high temperature polyurethane foam fireblock insulation around the outside.
I still have more details to add to it, but its functional the way it is.

For a "seat of the pants" job I'd say you did a great job! Looks like it cooks well too.
I like the design of the door on the FB with the channel and bar stock... Hmm, my blatantly plagiarize that one in the future.
Great work and I look forward to more cook pics from it. _________________ Cranky Buzzard BBQ FB Group |

The door trick was one I learned back in my college days when we made wood burning stoves as a class project. If your plate is flat, it will seal of almost completely.

bud-wie-ser, I am impressed A well thought out design, I also am loving the fire box door seal, and the angle iron trim around the cooking chamber. Very nice work indeed _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I really have the bug now and I want to build a bigger trailer mounted pit (something to keep me busy this winter).
Morick:
The only dislike i have at this point is that I have to feed it a couple of splits every 30-45 minutes. I just added a raised fire grate, so hopefully the improved airflow thru the coals will help. _________________ Bud

That's not out of range for most stick burning smokers for adding wood. You can play with the size of the sticks that you add to try to add a little time but keeping a good bed of coals is the key. That means feeding often for most offsets! _________________ Homemade offset smoker 24"x48"

Here is the fire grate I just added, It helps a lot to maintain temps with less fuel.
And just to try it out, I did a small load of venison jerky

I got to this thread from here: http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44835
Nice looking build. A couple questions for you bud wie ser, if you don't mind.
- Is your firebox a wood stove you purchased, or did you build it yourself?
- With the fire grate, how long can you go before you have to throw another stick in?
- Have you tried it with charcoal to see if it would last longer?[/url] _________________ GO COLTS!
