I am tired of the newspaper ashes flying around everywhere so I will be getting a burner attachment for my small propane bottles.

Would I still light it from the bottom and how long would I need to keep it there?

reubenray, light it from the bottom and when you start seeing some glowing you are there. Also I like to use my side burner on my gas stove or if I am out at my shop a crawfish burner on low works great to.

I use a small propane flame thrower.. Shocked Really they work great,But then again the newspaper works good also I just lift mine up off the ground so air can get to the paper for a good hot burn.

I use a paper towel with vegetable oil or bacon grease on it and get almost no ashes. Lots of black smoke at first but I don't see what that hurts.

In a pinch I'll dip a few pieces of charcoal in sterno and put them in the bottom of the chimney. Then I load the chimney with charcoal and use a stick lighter to get it going.

I wonder if you could spray a few with Pam then light them?

I use old tunafish cans with cardboard coiled inside. I fill it up with paraffin wax and stick a match in it. just light the match and let it catch fire. Set the chimney on top till it is going good then pull it off and put a lid on the tuna can to put it out.

I make my own firestarters with 2 oz paper cups (the kind they give you meds in when you're in the hospital), filled with sawdust and then pour parafin over that and let harden. They work great and are non-toxic.

I stick one fire starter in the bottom of my chimney starter and light that from the bottom. Works great and no newspaper ash.

Normally I use the paper from the charcoal bag so I don't have to keep newspaper on hand. If you want very little ash, then use a sterno. Just light it and it will catch, then blow it out and screw the lid back on.

I put a couple of firelighters in as well ... works fine for me - sometimes I have to relight them, but normally they work out fine.
