acampane, welcome to the ring I look forward to seeing some pics of your cooks. And following your cooker build. If you are talking about an oval fuel oil tank there have been many made, above in the cooker section there is a thread named smokers of the smoke ring. These are builds done by members. Take a look at Roasters, and there is a few more. If you find one you like do a search for their name and look at the build thread. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

I'm with k.a.m -- those make excellent smokers. Ther is a man here who uses one for his bbq restaurant! You can make it a roaster type or an offset. Have fun building! _________________ Double-Barrel Smoker

NOW YA DUN IT! Ya got me thinkin' again...and that's when I become a danger to myself and others in close proximity. I've also got an old oil tank, and the plan WAS to just make a large charcoal grill that I could put on caster wheels and load onto the trailer frame I have.
Now I'm thinking about how to build a removable offset firebox, and make it a "convertible". Thanx, guys....like I needed another project idea! [Don't tell the wife...she hates it when I have to spend more money on a project.] |

| HA i hear ya. i just moved into my house and have about 100 projects. My wife wasn't the happiest when she heard about the smoker, she will be though when the foods coming out. I like you also wanted to be able to to have a smaller charcoal. I don't remeber who, but someone on the forum had a 275 gal cooker and then seperatly on the trailer a smaller charcoal cooker - best of both worlds |

| thank K.A.M. - will have some up shortly...Quick question for you guys, something that had crossed my mind while planning this out. Anyone ever put propane elements straight into the cooker area "oil tank section" and used the firebox strictly for developing the smoking/flavor aspect...I'm thinking this would help a lot with heat control....i could be completely off on this - don't forget im a rookie |

acampane, the burners you speak of are doable, and have been done, My only concern with them is the lack of safety measures taken some times. If the flame goes out, then you have a 275 gall. bomb waiting to ignite. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Ok so hopefully these photos work. Attached is the trailer and tank which i will be using. Both as you can see need comlete restoration. It's going to be a fun project. As of today i have the rust and buildup pretty much off the tank. I will be pulling the trailer off tomorrow and working on cleaning it up.

Ok i need my design ripped apart and or told it will work! Again this is my first build...My intentions or plan is to use a 275 gal oil tank seen above and almost build it like a double barrel smoker. i have yet to see this done. Im also planning on taking 2ft width wise off the oil tank. I don't really need all that cook space and i believe i'll have better heat control. You will also see the vertical smoker i have located on the right, im planning on using a 55 gal drum there. Kinda like charcoallounge's setup. This will be mounted on a trailer so don't worry about how im going to get it to stand up. I'll figure it out All opinions welcome as work will be commencing shortly. thanks in advance.

acampane, the only weak link I see is the fire box. I would look for something a bit more solid to use. Other than that I like the lay out, and it should work. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

I agree with k.a.m. if you plan on building a cooker that size, why skimp with a 55 gal. drum. Im sure that your going to have a fine cooker that will last. |

| I hear you guys and totally agree. I'm just going with what i have around. It's hard to sit around and wait and look for the best stuff when i want to get some meat cooking. Hopefully i'll be getting some pics up in a few days. |

You could go ahead and put the 55 gal drum on till you find something better, just make sure you grate heights are at a comfortable level for tending the food. i believe that's why a DPP smoker is designed in the back and below instead of just directly below. with a oil drum like that i would think of doing a DPP style smoker. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill
