One last pic for the day, this is the vertical chamber, it is upside down at the moment till i get it all welded together, then ill lay it with the door facing up to install the door before i mount it to the horizontal.

Hillbilly, I like the vertical design Have you done a rough weigh-out to see where your gonna be upon completion? Also I am wondering if you are keeping a tab on cost, I am interested in what you will have in this build as a guideline to one I am gathering material for. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks KAM, to be honest i don't know what its gonna weigh, but i know it's gonna be heavy, so far I've bought 2 4x8 1/4" sheets of plate, the pipe is 20" x 4' 1/4" thick the legs and base are 2x2 1/4", yes I'm keeping tabs on the cost, when im done ill take it to the scales and have it weighed and do a post on that and the total cost.
Right now i have:
$280 in the 2 sheets of plate----------------------652lbs
$130 in the pipe 10' long, only used 4'-----------210lbs for 4'
$80 for 2 pieces of 1/4" 2x2 angle 20'-----------128lbs
$66 for 2 sheets of 4x8 expanded 3/4#9---------40lbs guessing
$100 for misc angle and flat bar @ the depot----100lbs guessing
$105 for 20' of 4x4 sq tube 3/16---20lbs a foot, using 4' so 80lbs
$50 for the 4 steel castors-----------------------40lbs probably
misc weight-----------------------------------------200lbs probably
So I'm guessing the total build is gonna weigh between 1300 to 1500lbs.
And I'm guessing little less than $1000 but that also leaves me with enough material to build a basic offset with a round firebox. which I'm gonna do and sell.
What are you planning on building? _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

Hillbilly, I for the longest wanted to build myself a trailer cooker. I have access to at least three tanks for cooking chambers and working on a trailer, which I more or less have. But recently my objective is leaning more towards your build concept. I have a fine 24'' x 36'' offset, but I am needing that extra 12'' or so on the length, and I would also love a vertical on this one. I also have access to all sorts of smaller tanks for verticals so mostly mine will be round but I am in a bad way wanting a square fire box. I am closely following your progress, especially on your fire box, I like the design. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

i wanted to be able to Grill so that's why i made the top like i did, remove the plate, set the grill grate in place and I'm also making a lid over the top of the firebox, so i can lay a pizza stone inside to cook pizzas, or a little rack with legs so i can use it as a warmer. i only wish the grill part was a little bigger, its 15x15 i think. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

Shoot they want $280 per sheet here. $80 per sheet of expanded metal. You are getting really good prices on that steel.
HillBilly is that deer silhouette made of stainless? It looks like it. I am getting ready to plasma cut my first aluminum. Gotta make a weather vane for someone and I found a nice piece of aluminum for free.
Excellent job you are doing and your buddy who made the deer silhouette. _________________ The Wild Pig build.

Thanks purple, Sounds to me like you have to many middle men between you and the maker, i get mine from a pretty big comany that also buys and sells scrap metal, they also do fab work. they have a $150 dollar min order. The deer is 1/4" mild steel. good luck on your aluminum job.

This is exactly why this site is so valuable and appreciated, and why it has saved me from wandering around lost in the proverbial BBQ wilderness...
Cheers - and carry on _________________ Save the planet: it's the only one with beer!

Looking to hire a part time grinder, there's no pay involved and the working conditions are extremely hot in the garage, i can only provide beer, and only after the work is done. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

Thank you sir, I just have to keep reminding myself that there's not that much left to grind and keep at it, lol. i have the vertical about 3/4 done on the grinding so i will definitely be mounting it this weekend with pics as usual _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

HillbillySmoker, do you happen to know if your pipe came from Houston, Texas perhaps? Color sure looks close and if it did you/we have a bit of history in our builds. I picked mine up in Houston and was told it was from the demolition of Astroworld, a rollercoaster support.

Toontroller, i have no idea where it came from other than the scrap yard i picked it up at, but after a few beers that story sounds good to tell my buddies lol. They had a bunch of it stacked up in a fenced off area i guess to sell to whoever wants it. its structural pipe, underneath the blue its primered and whatever kind of paint it is it doesn't want to come off easy.
When did they demo Astroworld?, I remember going there years ago.
Serial Thriller, Ultra Twister and XLR8 were the three coasters that were painted blue. I was there in 1990 i think. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

I'm thinking 2008 they were still cutting up pipe. Had a friend in the industry tell me he thinks that paint is a silicon base paint and your right it's tuff stuff. Put a brush to it and it just kinda smears, weed burner won't touch it!
I built two hot fires to season then cooked twice on it and only maybe a foot right at the firebox burned off. After all the heating a sandblaster made real quick work getting down to bare metal.
And I just noticed I forgot to say in the other post, GREAT LOOKING BUILD! |

The past few weeks I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to get this heavy vertical chamber up in the air to mount it and i was talking to a buddy at work today who also does metal fab work as a hobby and he jokingly said cut a hole in your sheet rock in the garage, put a rope around the joist and use a come along, then the light bulb went off and i realized i have a set of drop down stairs in the garage ceiling so I'm going to lay a 4x4 across the rafters and hook a chain hoist to it, this weekend the Vert is getting mounted, I'm almost ready. Pics to follow. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

Stayed up late this evening, got the vertical partially welded on.
The smoke stacks are just sitting there not welded yet, just threw them in the pic. I'm going to make my exhaust dampers before i mount them. I guess I'll open up the horizontal tomorrow, errr... today, when i get up, lol. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill
