I found out, i was gonna have mine rolled, a 4' piece and a 2' piece, but before they rolled it they were gonna cut my doors and leave small sections in place, then roll it and weld up the seam, plus 4 2' Dia Circles for the end caps, anyways was gonna cost me $800.00 for that so i said no thank you, lol. i ended up buying a 10' long 24" Dia 1/4 inch thick structural pipe and a 4'x4' 1/4 inch thick steel plate for $200.00. the money I'm saving is going towards my new plasma cutter. _________________ Patio Smoker Grill

been working hard on the smoker this weekend. got the hinges finished and mounted and the doors completely cut out. also got the reverse flow plate supprt in and made two of the four sliding racks. bout 15 hours in past three days. going to keep it goin and try to get the smoker itself done by end of janruary. I want to bild a custom trailer for it but if i can just get it set on a trailer for the first comp. that would work too but we will se what happens.

Those hinges are sweet. After the ones I have seen here lately, barrell hinges will never look the same or as good.

Looking great! What did you use to cut the doors out, and how did you keep them from warping when you welded the hinges on? _________________ The Smoker King |

| yahh im from kansas im from dodge city. i used a plasma to cut doors out and i took my time welding the hinges. just a little bit at a time but got it hot on the left door. had to hea with rosebud and rapid cool to pull it back. the channel iron keeping the doors from opening so far is becuase at first i just opended the doors all the way and let the sit overnight like that and just the weight bowed the door about and 1/8 of an inch. so gunna have to pull the bottom edge back in so the door fits right. but now im running into the counterweight problem. i just dont know how to calculate the weight and all the angles to make them so they open easily but not too easy that they try opening going down the road. |

The counterweight is a trick. On the last one I built, I welded a the supports where I wanted them and welded a 1 foot piece of 4" square tubing with a cap on one end to the supports. I reserved a piece of 4 inch tubing and melted lead into it to form square blocks. I them put the blocks into the tubing on the smoker until it was where I wanted and welded the last end cap on. It works pretty well.
I do not have a plasma cutter, and I an cut pretty straight, but I am debating on cutting them out with a cutoff disc. I know that will take forever, but it will be straight and the cuts will be thin. _________________ The Smoker King |
