I picked up a huge bag off these from the market, but I have no idea what kind of pepper it is. Does anyone have any idea? They are dried and i have been removing the seeds and grinding them to powder. I have about 500 seeds, I planted 5 and they all germinated so I'd like to figure out what I have on my hands.

Looks like a common guajillo ristra chile to me. Mild in heat, but has a nice flavor.

It's about double the size or the serranos I have growing out back. Its about 5-6" long. Has a somewhat sweet smell to it and a mild heat. It is actually very tasty, I got them off a mexican family if that helps any. I'm not sure if the picture shows it too well but it is a very deep red color. I hope to have a few plants in about a month, hopefully the leaves will reveal more about them.

If anyone wants some seeds I have more then I can ever use. I had a 100% germination rate with the ones I tested. Just send me a self addressed and stamped envelope and I'll send some out.

Yeah, I made a batch of chili and tossed the seeds in a pot to see if they would sprout.

Boy howdy did they! 100% germination rate is about right.

+1 on the guajillo. That was my guess at first sight.

Don't know what it is, but I'd bet $1,000 it's not an ancho.

+2 on the guajillo. Anaheim and New Mexico chiles are longer, normally. But as was mentioned, it could be one of a lot of different varieties.

There are many different of "NM" chiles. They range from small to large and mild to hot. It could be one of those. It could also be a guajillo. It doesn't look like a serrano, jalapeno or anaheim. I can say this much, in NM we would call that a red chile.

It is a guajillo - the coloring nails it. The guajillo is a great all-around pepper.

A chile de arbol is about 1/6th as wide and half as long, and a darker red - and my favorite tasty chile. Use them all the time for things like carnitas.
