That has to be the best looking smoker I've ever seen. It's one thing to see a massive trailer rig that can cook herds of meat but rarely is one this nice to look at. I'm really impressed and like the other guys, I'll be on the lookout for a whiskey barrel of my own.

I guess you should be carefull,it is a smoker and not a grill ,I never get mine any hotter than 300 degrees, and my charcoal basket with ash pan are elevated off the bottom of the barrel and I usually leave a quarter of an inch of water in the bottom of it when its fired up,the bottom does not get hot at all.I also rehydrate the barrell by filling it with water for a couple days before I us it.Maybe a few helpful hints you can pass on to your friend. Very Happy

i think his coal basket touched the side and he didn't notice, and it eventually lit up.

the basket itself will get much hotter than 300 degrees.

GEE thanks Bacon....I never even wanted to mess with a UDS until I found this thread. i have 2 barrels at the house so I guess what my next project is going to be. (guess the shower is gonna have to wait).
Are the 3 3/4 inlets enough? Is the only part that comes off is the top couple of inches?can you show more pics of the inside. if so that would be great Thanks

I have never cooked with more than one inlet open at a time,i just pick the side the winds blowin on and open that vent for a few minutes and the temp will rise,I shut the vent off about 3 degrees before my desired temp and it will stop on the money where you want it. Very Happy As for the insides, everything is in my build thread. As for the top couple inches.. Laughing Laughing Thats a nine inch cut. Very Happy

Is the burner's make up air solely the gap between the staves? There's daylight through them so it would be a charcoal smoker only once...poof!

the barrel was very old, so it did have some gap on the staves. I am using a 2000 degree morter caulk to remedy that. It will dry as hard as a rock, so there will be no gap.

The air intake at the end of the burner is outside the barrel. I will also be installing 2 pipe nipple air intakes. I have smoked in it 2x now with great success and also used the lower rack directly over the burner as a grill and everything worked great.

Question: I will be getting some Jack Daniel's branded barrels. I was thinking of finishing in to a golden oak color and making some propane smokers with electronic start, like I did with this old barrel. When finished what do you think I could sell it for (price range)? Any ideas, comments etc would be appreciated.
