Hiya, I finally got a smoker. It's used and I cant see a brand name but it does have an offset fire box. I love to grill and mostly use Mesquite wood chunks for doing that. Now I want to have some fun this summer BBQing with this smoker. A few quick questions if I may? If I shouldn't ask in here then just boot me out and I'll learn my lesson. I have been reading a lot in here. GREAT PLACE! You all seem very nice and I would love to learn anything you will be able to teach me. Now the questions.
Could a guy just put some good ole Kingsford in that box then stuff some hickory chunks in there every so often to get some smoke going over the ribs? I am learning about lump from this site so anyone that feels like explaing please let me in on it. I will continue to read the rest of the posts though. I am no slacker !!! HEHE Thanks!! |

Willy, welcome to the forum. There are alot of great guys with tons of information to share here.
I would suggest going to www.nakedwhiz.com as he has a lump charcoal database that is second to none. There is even a great FAQ section http://nakedwhiz.com/lumpfaq.htm that should answer some of your questions on lump charcoal.
As for kingsford briquets........sure you can use those in your off-set...........you will just have to watch out for ash accumulation.........and you will likely get shorter burn times than you would with lump. _________________ Dinger |

Willy, if you have a Walmart close by (and I am guessing that is likely a yes) you might just want to head over there and see if they have any Royal Oak lump in stock.........they sell 10 pound bags for like $5..........a very good deal.
Good luck on that first smoke....would love to hear about it and see some pics. _________________ Dinger |

Dinger, I did get the lump (thanks) It didn't rain but I had to work all weekend. I will try later this week. I did find out what smoker it is though. It's a brinkman smoke n pit. I posted some questions in the rub cat on this site. It ok to ask you questions in here? I don't want to break any rules. Oh where are you? Just wondering. OOPS I just saw in your profile. |

Lump charcoal is the only option in my mind...you get a much slower burn and it doesn't add any chemical flavors like briquettes...
Make sure you keep that ash cleaned out of your offset...any moisture that collects in there will react with the ash and in time, rot out your firebox..
Welcome, and all the best! _________________ Joe Johnson

The Royal Oak will treat you right................I am sitting here in the DC burbs.................lol........a bit too many people for me, but frankly the pay is worth it.
I had planned to smoke last weekend and didn't get to either.............and now with Easter looming this weekend it looks like I am off another week..........driving me nuts. _________________ Dinger |

Yeah......the DC folks are definitely into the whole taxation without representation cause.........interesting how the cause of the Boston Tea Party is still in practice here in our own nation's capital. Of course I actually live in VA, lol.....so thankfully I don't have to deal with that except when they are handing out literature when I head to DC Nats ball games.
I just got rid of my gas grill and bought a charcoal one...........finally convinced the wife that the taste would alone make it worth it.......... _________________ Dinger |

Yes, I am a Nats fan.........HOWEVER I am first and foremost a Yankee fan who has satellite tv and radio just to make sure I can get all of the games. That being said, I do enjoy having a team here in the DC region.........will be fun going to see them play each other twice in June (I got tickets for 2 of the 3 games)...........of course I will be wearing Yankee gear.........
I have not tried the hasty bake. You will have to tell me how it works. I do know I have to pick up some more Royal Oak tonight though. _________________ Dinger |
