I've decided I want to make some pulled pork for the 4th of July, but since it's pretty much only me who's going to be eating it, I'm looking for suggestions for smallish cuts of pork. Is there such a thing as a 3 or 4 pound pork butt? Any other suggestions for something in this size range? I'm pretty ignorant about the different cuts of meat...wouldn't know a picnic ham from a picnic basket...so any advice y'all might have will be appreciated.

I usually see small boston butt roasts at the grocery store that are boneless. That would work well and they are usually 3-5 lbs.

You may find a small shoulder roast too either will work. Cool

yes they have small butts that are 3 to 4 lbs. You may want to ask the butcher to cut one that size if they don't have one in the case. Also, check on the country style ribs. They aren't ribs, they're sliced up pork butt. A little slow and low for a couple hours... pulled pork in the end! Very Happy

I've used country style ribs which are just cut up butt. They get done a little faster as well, but can dry out on you, too.

This

I use shoulder CS ribs (not loin ribs) to make me a small batched of pork samwiches all the time, very tasty imo.

Vaughn...get you a butt....get one with bone in......even if you end up with a 6 to 7lb butt you will probably have 3 lbs of finished product...knock out some sammiches and freeze you some leftovers. After a rough day of work in a couple of weeks you can come home and have you some more pulled pork sammiches. Thats the way this works. You are wanting to do a butt....after you do cs ribs you are still going to want to do a butt...it's the 4th of July...what better way to spend it then with a fine butt.

Thanks guys. I think Mr. Hawg has convinced me to look for a bone-in butt and plan on frozen leftovers. Wink I may do some CSRs too, since I can probably coerce the wife into trying one.
