I am getting ready to buy a smoker trailer from Pitts & Spitts here in Houston. I was wondering if anybody here has bought one? Does it work well? How was their service? I am new to the BBQ scene so I REALLY do have a lot of questions.

I bought one of their backyard 24X36 backyard offsetts. It was my first smoker & after using if for a year I think I pretty much know how it is going to work most of the time. The lid is stainless and hinged. Requires no counterweight. The firebox has a lifetime burn out warranty, not sure if it's their lifetime or mine Laughing

Fit & finish look good to me. I was at the Humble livestock show rodeo cookoff, and there were a bunch of P n S pitts there. They can be built to as many specs as you got money to spend. One was even powder coated a sort of pink color Exclamation

Good Morning, If a Pitts and Spitts is waht you want you will be happy with it. However because of the cost of stainless you could get alot more pit for the money with another brand. I would shop around if I were you. There are at least 6 pit builders in the Houston area to choose from. Towards the bottom of the thread i listed below there is a list of links I just compiled on a bunch of pit builders. look at them before you decide. Enjoy.

I did got to three other shops here in Houston. I went to Gators, Klose, and JJ's. They all had nice looking products. I guess I kinda like the Pitts & Spitts one the best. Time will tell and I am sure I will learn a lot (mostly from mistakes) I am going to the Montgomery County Cookoff in Conroe this weekend to watch (spy) and learn. The pit I am looking at $6500. It is a lot of money.

One thing though. I am hearing a lot of different opinions on how to properly break a pit in.

What is the correct way to do this?

I just want to add one thing that may apply, make a difference or not mean anything at all. Keeping in mind that I believe that they make a great smoker, I will add this. I have a large stainless steel smoker and the one thing I don’t like about it is the patina (discoloration) it gets in the hot areas. I have tried everything to get rid of it short of sanding. Mike (BBQMAN) tells me that it is a badge to be worn proudly, (he has a large stainless smoker also) but it just bothers me that it turns colors. Now this has nothing to do with the functionality of the smoker, it just looks weird. Anyway at $6000 you can buy a lot of smoker. I think someone on the forum had a complete mobile kitchen for sale. Just my 2 cents…… good luck!

Holy cow! Or 2 cows with that thing! Are you planning to do catering or open a business? That must be massive. My little offset cost 400 bucks and it'll do enough to feed 20-25 folks.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Very Happy

Only the "pit door" on the smoker is stainless. Well, the counter top and a couple of other items not directly involved with the smoker are stainless. I have never seen a BBQ Pit on a nice trailer for $400.

This is not my pit. It is one like my pit though. My trailer will be red (3 weeks to delivery) but the pit itself will be black except the stainless doors. There is a stainless countertop and storage area on the other side of the trailer as well as a wood bin.

Mine is just a backyard smoker. Man that thing is MASSIVE! You're going to have a lot of fun and make a lot of friends with that one. You'll have them coming from two miles around just walking up. Luckily with that big sucker, you'll have more than enough grub! Laughing

Actually, it is small compared to the ones in my area that I am seeing. I dont have money like them. They are spending 15K and 20K on those darn things just to have cookoffs. My neighbor (why we dont talk I dont know, I live out in the county on 5 acres) has a bigger pit than the one I posted. Every once in a while I notice that his goat are gone.

Just curious about the need for a trailer and multi thousand dollar smoker off the bat when you have said you are a total newbie who hasn't any experience with smokers? Not to be negative, just wondering why you don't start with something small and move up as necessary.........the more you know about smoking....you might get a better idea of what you want in the long run.

The reason is that we go to the river a lot with our boat and there are some areas that we can park the trailer at and have fun with our friends and BBQ. I do have a gas grill outside that I do briskets and steaks on but I know they will turn out better on wood that with gas. Plus, I only want to have to buy one. I already know that I am going to like it. I have been to a couple of cookoffs as a spectator and had a blast. Plus my Wife is really enthused about the whole thing. Plus we want to have company BBQ's (I am tied to a family business). We also are going to use it as a tool to put our company logo on it and push our company a little and have fun doing it.

Makes a bit more sense now...........I was just afraid you were going a bit overboard for a smoker that was just gonna sit in the driveway for you and your friends.

Being in business (not really, my parents do own our company) I can tell you that write offs do not come that easy anymore. I would like to see a pic of your pit though. I know I am never going to have the biggest pit I just feel like this pit will serve our "needs" and we will have fun with it. AND LOOK GOOD DOING IT.

Well, I hope you get exactly what you want! I'm not trying to talk you out of it really. Just making sure you knew what you were getting into. We try to look out for each other from the start on this site. At least the other guys did for me. I'll be expecting my invite to the bbqs. Wink

Cool. I was just trying to make sure you knew dinger and I weren't trying to jump your ass. There are a lot of forums out there (not usually bbq forums) that tend to do that right from the start and you're not "One of them" until you have 1000 posts. These guys aren't like that at all.

Happy smoking. Razz
