Can anyone tell me if Honey Locust is safe to use to smoke? I cut out several trees last fall and have a nice size pile of wood that would be perfect for BBQ. I was hoping someone might have some knowledge of this wood. The blossoms certainly smell sweet in the spring. I was hoping the wood might have a sweet flavor to it |

I dont know, but maybe if you re-posted this in the wood section you might get somemore suggestions over there. some people dont answer a post if it is in the wrong spot.
if you dont know, try it on chicken first, and if you dont like it then try it on the dog, if he doesnt like it try it on the mother in law, and if she doesnt like it, who cares |

According to this page, it seems to have good characteristics for smoking, but only one way to find out

I have heard that Honey Locust is good for smoking meat. Just make sure it isn't Black Locust. That would be very nasty indeed!! _________________ Rocky Richmond - Big Drum Smokers

Oops, I'm new to the boards and didn't see the Wood and Charcoal forum. I'll try posting it there. |

Here in West Virginia we use black locust for fence posts. I don't know much about honey locust though. I would try the suggestion krazylegs had about the chicken. Sometimes when I want to test a wood fast, I'll smoke a piece of hamburger for about 15 minutes, then move it over the coals and finish it by grilling. Ground meat seams to pick up a smoke flavor pretty fast. That will give you an idea of the taste. _________________ If God did not want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat? |
