I'm wanting to build a 55 gallon smoker, but I dont want the UDS version, I'd like to find some plans to make one thats length wise, not up and down.

Do a search for the famed "double barrel" smoker. That would be your best bet if want to create a smoker that is not upright out of a drum.

Do you want a grill as in the title or a smoker as in the post. You contradict yourself Question

I am looking to do the same thing. I have a drum and am now trying to figure out what to use for a fire box.

It is good to see a pic from someone who has done the same!!! a UDS is good and all but I think it would be fun to try an offset for a change.

where are you getting hung up? do you have any specific questions?

This is slide show hope it helps you out. I modified it just this year with a damper from the firebox to the smoke chamber and made a big difference.

Just click on the photo and should work

I used an old nautilus gym that was taking up space in the basement. It didn't work so good but worked perfect for the stand.

I started with one that was closed on both sides. It had a drain plug on the top and just cut out the drain plug to use for the opening to the fire box.

You can see the cut out from the drain plug.

I put the cut out part as a drain for the bottom of the smoking chamber.
