I got a little more work done today on the smoker. I got the base welded up, the handle on, and the tank mocked up to just about where I think it needs to go. I still have to cut the old feet off yet, but overall I am happy with the looks of things.

Here I got the handle welded on. I wish I would have put it just a tad lower, but I think it will be ok how it is.

Once I got the handle out of the way, I cut up the 2 X 2 square tune I had for the base. Still need a few more pieces yet.

RedneckRocket, your moving right along Very Happy I would think about that handle position. It looks like it might brand you when your door is going to full open position. I am guessing you have lifted it and it does not touch your forearm, but it seems a bit high. looking good keep those pics coming Smile

Yeah, it is just a shade to high, but being 6 foot 3 it will work out ok.

Once I had the base all welded up I decided I would visa my handle a bit more. Once that was all said and done, I figured I would set the cook chamber on and are how it all ligned up. Overall I am happy with it. I still need to cut the feet off the bottom of the tank yet. Its just about ready to weld on I would say. Maybe tomorrow. Have to save some work yet. So far I am into the build for 77 dollars and change. Not to shabby!

PostPosted: May 30 2009    Post subject: stack material question? Reply with quote

I am wondering as I sit here about stack material. What does everyon else use? Does it absoutly have to be quarter inch material or can it be lighter in wall thickness. Just wondering about the benefit of the heavy wall thickness, and the fact that I have a d inch tune sitting here that would work perfectly.

Looking good so far! Keep the pics coming

In terms of stack material, you can go with a thinner material as this area is not going to see much heat. I am using a semi truck exhaust stack. It can't be any more than .090 thick....

Oh yea, Could I suggest you move your handle on your cooking chamber lid down a little. I am concerned you might burn your wrist when it is in full up, especially someone that might be short and try to raise the lid.

EDIT: Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes I see someone else noticed this also! Sorry..

PostPosted: May 30 2009    Post subject: how about this? Reply with quote

I know I have read it somewhere on the boards here but I could not find it. My stack will come out the side of my cooking chamber. Am I correct in saying that the top portion of the stack that goes into the cooking chamber from the side should be even with the top of the top cooking rack? Correct?

Thanks!

RedneckRocket, a lot of people place them at grate height. On my last build that is where I put them, I believe the theory is so the smoke stays low longer. I did mine just above the grate.

So would that be at the highest or the lowest grate?

When i built mine i centered the exaust hole with my grate and it dident work out so well (It was choking itself) so i welded the hole shut and raised my exaust about three quarter the way up and i like the results alot better . I use wood only in my offset.

on the other hand i think the ultimate setup would be 2 exaust outlets one lower and one upper with dampers like the peoria mobile cookers. I have no actual knowledge if this is a better setup though, but in thoery.

Well, I believe I am going to go with the bottom edge level with the lowest shelf and are how it goes.

Didn't get the handle moved yesterday, maybe today I will work on it again. Hard to say, I hear the catfish calling me though. Hehe hehe hehe.

I worked a bit more today on the cooker. Got the stack made and welded on. I made the length according to the spread sheet here on the ring. I think it turned out great, and it looks wise it is at just the right height. Could have got a bit more done, but I hit the river again today. Caught a nice 7 pound cat. He was mighty tasty!

Still have the handle to move yet. Mama says that she likes it where it is, but I am sure after it is painted she will want it moved.

Just another shot of the stack. Maybe tomorrow I will get the damper built for the stack.
