I am wondering what size and length bolts you are all using and that size drill bit fits best with that bolt I ask because the bolts I bought have a square shape at the top - it seems like this will keep the bolt from fitting flush.

Also what size drill are you all using to drill the vent holes? Should I just go ahead and invest in a step drill? What size?

Thanks!

belmontjohnson, it sounds like you have carriage bolts, if you use stove bolts they are threaded to the end and will fit flush to your drum. I do not know what works best but I would use at least 1/4'' and probably you can get by with 2'' to 2 1/2'' long. If you are using 3/4'' pipe for vents then a 1'' hole is needed to thread the pipe into it from what I have read, and I would use a step bit that way you have a clean hole and you can use it on all your bolts as well.

Thank you! I will buy the step bit - I don't remember seeing any bolts called stove bolts - do you know if they would be called something else at home depot or lowes?

belmontjohnson, sometimes they could be called machine screws. Here is a link to what they look like.
