Would raising my charcoal grate in the firebox help with temp control?I am using an offset style smoker.
My guess would be yes, since I won't have to worry about ash smothering the fire,am I on the right track here? |

| Turbo24, it will help with keeping your fire out of the ash and let you get the most out of your coals, and to me that would relate to more even temps because less fighting with a fire that is trying to put itself out in its ashes. I think its a good idea. |

Turbo, I have the Char-Griller Smokin' Pro w/ SFB. I've done nearly every mod possible on this smoker, but the raised charcoal box was the best improvement of them all.
Purchase a 24" x 24" piece of expanded metal from Home Depot ($1 . Then pickup the stainless steel bolts, nuts and fender washers from your local hardware store ($ . You can cut the 1/16" metal with a sheet metal cutter. (Though my cousin's metal fabrication company came in handy.)
PM me if you have any questions,

Yeah, raising that charcoal basket will help with temp control. Do like NM says and do the expanded metal mod. It's cheap easy, and effective.
NM, lets's see a pci of all them mods!! |

1.what is the distance between your grate and the bottom of the box?
making some rough plans for my offset and was wondering what you guys are doing on this measurement.
2. what seems to be the optimal size expanded metal to use or is it better to build a frame and weld rod between?
looking for the longest most even burn times and temps. will be using some lump as well as sticks. |
